It’s a revised model of the previous Nations Championship, but with no promotion or relegation from the 6N. Personally I believe there’s too many international matches as it is, and this does nothing to reduce the number, therefore I don’t think it’s the right option. What do others think?

Don't really get Conrad Smith's comments about it being a better aligned season and better player welfare, unless I'm reading it wrong it's the same periods they'll be playing in with at least 4 extra games, currently it's 3 or 4 in the autumn and 3 in the summer and the new proposal is 11 games plus a final and relegation play off.

So during these seasons we're looking at a minimum 16 international games, then in the other 2 years it's WC and Lions. Wasn't the figure touted as the most a pro rugby player should play in a season being about 25 games?

This would end up with France, England, NZ and SA miles ahead of everyone else at international level as the club game in the other nations would go backwards.

Awful idea, unless you only care about the top 4 surviving and getting rich.

If I’ve read it correctly it’s 6 games (either home or away against the 6 Southern Hemisphere teams) and a final, in non-RWC / Lions years. It doesn’t actually lead to any more games (we currently play 7 in the Autumn and Summer, with some teams only playing 6), but you also lose the ‘easy’ game against Georgia / Samoa / Tonga in the Autumn, so it certainly isn’t particularly beneficial for player welfare. I believe the club game should be developed to produce more money, with the number of internationals reduced to make room in the calendar, and this unfortunately just locks in having 14 weekends taken up by internationals (if you include the fallow weekends of the 6N, but don’t include any warm up camps). That leaves no space to further develop the club game, and have a flowing season with internationals mostly available for the Scarlets.

This is a fairly predictable direction of travel when you get money men ( CVC) involved in our game. They have very little interest in the club game as such.

Yes you're right, I read it wrong. So its really chucking a league format into near to the current fixtures (but you only play half the teams in the league) and as you point out largely excluding emerging nations and having harder games.

That's all we're gaining is a big event, sorry I mean final, every 2 years. And some extra air miles in the summer.

Agree in general but CVC have a 28% stake in the URC so they must have some sort of will to see the club game prosper.

Will this then end that 4th autumn international game outside of the window that irritates people so much?

Assuming we don't get to the final every two years, of course.

Virtually, a World Cup every two years. We'd never see our international players at their clubs/Regions. What about the Lions tours? What about player welfare?

An idea solely to benefit NZ and Aus because it draws in the big media money from the Northern Hemisphere.

The whole game has lost the plot.

What's going on?

Will the WRU lose an opportunity to fleece some more money out of the international game?
On a serious note if I’d have to guess I suspect there won’t be official 3rd vs 4th / 11th vs 12th games but it will be a free weekend for teams that want to arrange a fixture. I suspect the English / French leagues will refuse to release any players that aren’t in the final while the WRU, Australian union and a few others will arrange games among themselves to make a bit of extra money (and screw the club game). Just my prediction, and not based on any of the reports released so far.
