Jenkins vows to give Scarlets lions' share of his attention

Aug 18 2004

Simon Thomas, The Western Mail

GARETH JENKINS insists he won't be distracted from his job with the Scarlets if he's appointed to the British Lions coaching team.

Jenkins is widely expected to be named next month as one of Sir Clive Woodward's six coaching assistants for next summer's tour of New Zealand.

That trip will culminate in a Test showdown with All Blacks boss Graham Henry, who was Lions coach three years ago in Australia.

In retrospect, it was felt by some that taking on the dual role of Wales and Lions coach had compromised Henry, who had to juggle both jobs during the first half of 2001 as he put plans in place for the journey Down Under.

The WRU moved to prevent any repeat this time around by barring national coach Mike Ruddock and his management team from being involved in next year's Lions tour.

But Jenkins - pipped for the Wales job by Ruddock - is adamant being part of Woodward's team wouldn't impair his focus on the Scarlets.

"It wouldn't be a distraction. Not at all," he said.

"It's a summer tour. The big work period is after January where you are going to be starting to look at identifying the players' form through the Six Nations.

"It's then that the focus will start and that isn't a heavy period for us because I think we have only got two Celtic League games in the Six Nations anyway."

Jenkins also points out that he has superb support on the coaching front at Stradey from Nigel Davies, Paul Moriarty and fitness coach Wayne Proctor.

"The coaching group here has grown," he said. "Nigel is growing year by year and developing into a real quality coach.

"I think if the Lions were to happen for me it would give the opportunity for Nigel to grow himself and grow his responsibility in our structure.

"So I think it would be a benefit, not a negative."

Jenkins then reiterated that his own focus would remain firmly on Stradey through the course of the coming campaign.

And it's a season he's clearly excited about as the Scarlets look to defend their Celtic League title and go further than the quarter-final stage of Europe which they been eliminated at in the last two years.

"I wouldn't want to be in coaching if I wasn't able to be come excited by it," said Jenkins.

"I am very positive about the summer we have had. It has been planned and we've delivered the plan.

"We wanted to get into a six-day week pre-season training programme and we've trained up to twice and sometimes three times a day during that period.

"I think Wayne Proctor has done a magnificent job. We are leaner, faster, quicker and stronger than we have ever been and that's exactly what we wanted to achieve.

"That doesn't mean we are going to be a better team, but what it does mean is we are better prepared condition-wise than we've ever been before.

"It's up to us technical coaches to move that dynamic into our game and see if that can result in us performing better."

The Scarlets have moved to strengthen their squad for the challenges ahead by signing Wales A international Andy Powell.

Former Newport No 8 Powell, 23, who had spells with Beziers and Leicester last season, has been training at Stradey over the summer.

He will join a formidable back-row unit that includes internationals Scott Quinnell, Simon Easterby, Dafydd Jones, David Hodges and Gavin Thomas.

Why are there any doubts - GJ is a professional in his job and we wouldn't expect anything less.
