Yep, many of those listed gave everything for us. There are definitely a couple I am sad to see go but everyone of them have their reasons. Was always impressed when I saw Homer play.

Yes, Homer was certainly better than the average 4th choice scrum-half and had more pace than most of our backs. He deserves the chance to move to a squad that will give him a better chance to progress.

Beyond disappointed that Kennedy and Asquith are leaving. Far better than others who stuck around. Thanks for all the folks leaving have given us.

There must be a few players that have breathed a sigh of relief of not being released.
Will we now go out and get genuine pace  and quality to replace them or will we work with what's left

The importance of the above list will only be seen after the new recruitment plan is finalised. Some of the players named above didn’t play much for us anyway, some deserved more game time and others put massive shifts in for us. We’ll have to wait and see if the new recruits will be and improvement on those that are leaving. Modern rugby is a cutthroat business. Wish all the departing players all the best of luck for the future and my gratitude for their services.

Only one team plays in red. (Sorry, Scarlet)

Disappointed that Kennedy who is still only 26 and welsh qualified is going unless of course he wants to return home as he is the sort of just below Welsh international level we want? 🤔 Sorry for loyal Scarlet Tom Phillips who has been hampered by several long term injuries before he got going at senior level. Departure seemed inevitable.

As others have said good luck to all the players leaving us. I must confess, with the restructuring of the season I’m surprised that more players haven’t left us, especially at hooker where we seem to have 5 or 6 first team players, if my maths is correct.

Indeed.  I can see Homer popping up in another team and tormenting us in a few years time. Who will be our 4th scrum half next season then? Assuming we will still need 4.

Best of luck to the departing players.  There are some top blokes in that list.  Shame we didn't get a chance to wave them off at PyS.  All the best to them all. Clap

Interesting clip here of our non-Welsh contingent (all of them departing as it happens) trying to pronounce Welsh sayings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk43sez3lEU  " rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk43sez3lEU   ;

Good to see them making an effort to use Welsh and some of them sound as if they've 'gone native' over the years! Shame to see them go because the likes of Asquith, Homer, Kennedy, Cassiem will add a lot to any team.

Foxy looked better on the weekend but one swallow doesn't make a summer & all that. I'm gutted about Asquith, such a classy player.

Unpopular opinion here but Asquith has benefited from playing to his strenghts against tiring defences when coming from the bench. Other than that, he was nothing more than a good club player and certainly not a starter, of which we have a few. Yet the board seems enamoured with him.

Pretty pointless exercise comparing departing & retained players. I wish all 12 the very best for their futures. The life of a professional rugby player is a pretty tough one. For sure the benefits can be very good but for those outside the elite you are only ever working on a two year window of employment which I am sure can be very stressful with the ever present prospect of an injury round the corner.

Not that his class was ever in doubt but I set a quick message via Instagram to Cassiem, as I know a couple of mates have, to say "sad to see you go etc" & he has replied to every message sent to him.

If this is the final list of leavers, I think we're due some contract renewal announcements for Marc Jones, Rawlins and Cubby soon? Unless they've signed 4 year contracts at the time Confused

There's a re-signing being announced imminently.

I wonder how much more Foxy and Halfpenny have left in the tank.

I believe that Foxy and HP are both part of the welsh 38 elite players scheme, so as long as the WRU are picking up the majority of their wages they will remain with us.  I don’t believe that they have much more left in the tank (as this season has proven) so I can foresee them having maybe a season or two left at max.

On a pure numbers equation, given we realistically have a couple more new additions to do, I'd say we are likely to lose one or two.

Strange not to announce it at the same time as the others though. Unless we are looking to let go of players still in contract, or someone is moving to a non-playing role.

Anyone in mind Wil? I know the Scarlets came out & said they’re doing something special for Cassiem in the coming weeks so maybe if there are one or two more leavers they’ll be announced closer to that time.

Finance dictates in reality. The WRU are being their usual dynamic helpful selves according to Dean Ryan. How can a business expect to plan when they are still unaware of their projected income for next year.

Cubby and Patch ? They are just faded memories.  How many games have they each played in last two years for the Scarlets ? All very depressing for us and of course them.

I suspect Taylor Davies as well to Dragons?

They certainly are, if they overcome their respective issues will they even be close to the players they were?

Why just for Cassiem?? Jake Ball has been a colossus for the Scarlets and Werner Kruger has also been a great servant.

I thought the same. I have a lot of appreciation for Cassiem, we haven't had a player go out of their way to interact with the fans in the way that he has in years. But it's difficult doing something special for one player and not the rest. As you say, Ball and Kruger have been great servants.

In the pictures they released with it there was pictures with Ball, Kruger, Kennedy and Asquith but not Cassiem. Perhaps all it means is that Cassiem hasn’t had the shirt presentation and they’ll do that individually with him before he leaves? Trying to read in between the lines here because I can’t imagine us doing something for Cassiem that we wouldn’t do for other players.

Always a sad moment when players leave, especially those who have shown a lot of commitment, or have just had bad luck with injuries (or selector preferences!).

Good luck to all these guys, especially Cassiem.

Very much a guy who tried to connect with the fans.

I'm not saying anything about the others - there were good reasons for all of them - for example, Jake will be missed the most, but he's absolutely right to want to be with his family. I suppose that of those who could have been kept on, Cassiem is the one I regret the most.

Is this assuming we had no chance of keeping Ball due to him wanting to be with his family? Because for me Jake is a huge huge loss, the biggest of anyone leaving us.

Good timing. Career goals met and more competition in Wales squad at second row to guarantee a start plus family living in Oz and quite possibly a position with a team in Australia as well. Just so sad to see these farewells with no crowds present for us and the players ☹️

I agree here, I think we are looking at Cassiem's rapport with us fans & the extra effort he goes to with us. Balls carries & clear outs at rucks will be hard to replicate if we don't get a big second rower in.

A heart moving & at the same time heart warming article on WOL about Tom Phillips. His love of the Scarlet shines through & his philosphical outlook to being effectively rejected is a testimony to the individual. His dilemma outlines that for every professional rugby player there are 100's who do not make it for a variety of reasons - playing ability being just one. I wish him the very best for his and his family's future.

its some read GPR i agree, just felt so sorry for Tom. his run of injuries have just blocked what could have been an exceptional professional career.
he comes over as a very mature sensible lad who with a young family is looking for a career which i hope he finds.

Huge shame he been blighted by injury always rated him highly,  He seems really grounded young man,  I’m sure he will proposer in whatever field he chooses with the attitude he has shown.

It was sad reading about Tom. Played for my village of Llangennech and brought much pride to the area when he captained the U20s and played for Scarlets. Sadly he had no consideration for his own body and flew into everything hence causing his ongoing injuries. Best of luck to him going forward.

Good guy. Played for the RFC on a number of occasions during his injury come backs with great credit and just happy to play. Can’t believe he is still only 25. As has been said ferociously brave in the tackle and perhaps could have used a bit more caution on some of his hits. Tom seems to have accepted his position with huge amount of reality which is too his credit. It is a good place for him to now look at his career options. Pob lwc Tom 👍

According to todays WoL Jake Ball has already played his last game for the Scarlets and has departed to meet his family in Australia.
No doubt he will be missed and its a great shame the supporters didn't get the chance to say goodby.

Absolutely. Nice to see the Scarlets letting him go early considering these are meaningless games and he has a 6 month old child in Australia that he’s yet to meet in person. Best of luck to Jake in whatever he decides to do next.

Wouldn't shock me  if we see him France  in a year or two

Or Japan....

I think we'll see him in Japan sooner rather than later. Big loss.

We need a lock, a centre and possibly 7 and 9 cover.

There's been a lot of footage of Jake in recent days, his interview with Garan and You Tube video of him in action.  He came across very well in the interview and Dai Flanagan had nothing but praise for him for his attitude in training since his last game saying he put max effort in to helping the team and asking what he could do to help.

He will be a big loss to the squad.

Agreed there was a nice write up on him on the WoL. Jake was told he wouldn't play again after the Ospreys match & rather than pack his bags, he turned up on Monday for training & asked how he could assist the youngsters.

With most of those players having left, I would call an end to the season immediately. The Rainbow cup is a "failed" experiment.

I don't think you can call it a failed experiment. For sure some of the tinkering with rules have fallen short - but that is why you trial new things - to establish if they are workable/not. The tournament has given some much needed cash to participants, allowed the South African domestic based players much needed games prior to the Lions visit. From a Scarlets point of view our season cannot come to an end quickly enough for most supporters but we have seen the emergence of Tom Rogers as a starting 15 candidate along with Blacker continuing his improvement. Front row resources have been tested with Steffan Thomas & Kemsley Matthias showing good form, jury is out I think on Jeffries but he does appear to have improved considerably under quality coaching.

In short a bit of a nothing tournament with only a few benefits to be seen from a Scarlet perspective but I very much doubt that the Benetton supporters would agree.

It was ok as a spectacle.
From our perspective it was a total failure. Should have been the opportunity to have a run of games with a settled squad but we were in chaos.

The concept of the tournament was really good. The timing and execution was really bad. Hoping when everything is back, we can have a good competition with the SA teams.

Yes I have, having an argument with few ospreys workmates, they reckon awj had 4 guys holding awj whilst jake had 1 that's why he got some good punches in.  I thought it was 3 trying to hold each of them back.
I am 100% for playing rugby at better time of the year

Good scrap that! Happens in most teams up & down the country from time to time.

In terms of summer rugby, it will be good for the professional game but I’m not sure it can be replicated down to grass roots level.

good luck to jake in japan and hope his family are all ok too. good pay packet for him and well deserved after all he has done for us and wales.
but just querying, did jake have contract time left with us and if so did we just cancel the contract?
if so shouldnt we get some sort of transfer/renumeration from the japanese team?

To be fair, Japan is a country of choice for many Aus and NZ players as the travelling time isnt too bad and the timezones arent that different. Big money too, well deserved.

Yeah, the cynic in me says Jake didn’t have the balls to do what Cory Hill did and just say “I want to get some cash before I retire”

But at the same time Japan is closer to Aus and a similar time zone so easier to feel closer to home and easier to go back and forth.

Best of luck to him

Out of curiosity how is it that Japan can compete with France and England on salaries? Is it because their teams are offshoots of companies? Or is there a state sponsored move to put money into rugby?

And are the rugby players taxed differently to “regular” employees?

As in, I don’t really see how these corporations are paying an overseas player half a million euros to play for 3-4months a good investment

The Japanese season is far shorter than the European season so he’ll get to spend a lot more time with his family than if he’d stayed. Living somewhere that’s in the same time zone as Perth will make things more comfortable for him too.
