This is a bit of an odd fixture. I expect Saracens wanted a match to fill the holes caused by Worcester and Wasps dropping out.

For us though we’re unlikely to have our Wales U20s players available, and I don’t see the benefit of putting our regulars at risk of getting injured in a friendly at this stage of the season.

On the plus side the RFC and Llandovery don’t have a game this weekend so I expect we’ll see Shenton, the two O’Connors, Ben Williams, Griff Evans, Josh Phillips, Eddie James and Carwyn Tuipulotu play.

Ah, I guess we won’t have too many of their boys playing then, apart from Griff Evans who’s contracted to us.

I’d hoped that the likes of Doel might be given a game as we’re stretched in the Back 3 at the moment. We can’t afford another injury there now McNicholl is out long term.

With all that's going on around contracts and injuries it seems like a bad idea to be playing Sarries this weekend.  Is there financial benefit for us in taking on this fixture?  Whose idea was it, were we the only ones approached or the only ones to say yes?

It will be a development  game and boys returning from injury .

I would imagine Gruff Evans, Iestyn Rees if fit ? And possibly Harri Doel will be turning out ?

Sone senior guys need game time ( Jonny, Macloed, Morgan, Carwyn maybe Dinky a couple of others)… then It will be younger guys like the O’Connor boys, Ben Williams, Eddy James and others.

I’m hearing that the youngster Nott, a winger with Carm Quins is in the squad for the Sarries game.

He scored 2 very good tries for the Quins up in Ponty which I saw on the Prem highlights on social media.

He has apparently joined the Quins a month ago from university

Posted By: Mugwuffin
Date Posted: 08 March 2023 at 9:46pm
He came through the Exiles programme and played for our U16s and U18s.

We’re thin in the Back 3 now McNicholl is injured and Halfpenny away with Wales. Rogers and Conbeer have had their problems over the past few months too. There might be further opportunities for Nott if he plays well.

We had a Knott, (with a k) ourselves quite recently but he defected to the dark side. I don't think he's had many opportunities with them, and as a fringe player he can't be too sure about a contract renewal. Anyway I think he was mainly a centre and in these stressful times unless we are desperately short in a position we're not likely to make another signing.

I’m glad we’re not risking key players in this, aside from Rogers who’ll benefit from some time in the saddle at fullback.

There’s a first senior match for our academy centre, Macs Page, who I was a bit surprised to see left out of the Wales U18s squad recently. It’ll be a big step up for him playing against men, but a great learning opportunity for him in a match of no consequence.

It’s good to see we’re having a look at some young Back 3 players from the Welsh Premiership. Hopefully they’ll be able to make the step up.

Good to see the introduction of youth who are going to be reied on very heavily over the coming two years. Iestyn at 5 is a worry. What had happened to Caleb Salmon - he is not in the 20's 23 so I guess he must be injured as this match would have been ideal for him.

What's a little worrying is the scarcity of ball carrying second rows in the region in general and also in this particular selection, implying that not only has the first team squad a shortage but that no-one seems to be coming through with Caleb Salmon not yet fulfilling his early promise.

Very enjoyable first half of rugby, playing with confidence and the passes are sticking.
Saracens are a very useful side, they have some really big but fast athletes in their team, the n8 scored a world class try to get them back into game and seem to be able to just pick up,their game when required.

Absolutely not bad a bonus point against Saracens. Many teenager in starting team and boys ready to start. Tuipulotu one of them..
Maybe this financial situation is not the absolute bad...restart from the roots is the way..

Enjoyed the game plenty of positives for the Scarlets good talent coming through these players need to play more rugby than sitting in the stands

Good runaround for the players, I think for a match like that it’s all about positives. Missed most of the second half, any standouts?

An enjoyable match where we showed several glimpses of talent and imagination and which would have been a much closer affair if we could have matched the pace and power of the more experienced Saracens side.
Anyone know who our numbers 26 and 27 were?

I have never heard such bias commentary on a rugby match before.

Went to the game, Carwyn , Eddie James and Ollie Wynn the standouts for me.
Thought Iestyn Rees , Shenton and Ben Williams fought hard.

Difference was at half backs Sarries with De Haas and Vunipola.

Some of our tackling left a lot to be desired, particularly senior pros.

These guys are our future....the win would have been nice, but the experience invaluable.

Good game, some nice patterns and hands from our boys and some real talent.
Downside was the demonstration how size matters. They had the advantage in size and power almost from 1-15 and that is almost impossible to win against.
Thought Carwyn was excellent. He knew he was the only real physical threat on the Parc and he led by example

it’s their stream to be fair for their fans primarily and we are very lucky to be granted access to it . We can’t manage anything like that or don’t have the commitment to do so . I’m just envious of them

Agreed. I thought the coverage was excellent from Sarries. Fantastic for them to make it available for free. Loved the commentators. Think that one of them was part of the Sarries coaching set up.

Carwyn was in beast mode, to be fair. That extra effort after being tackled or held to smash free or push another yard was very very nice to see.
My guess is that some of our younger age grade graduates aren’t used to tackling centres and wings with that much size or power. A couple fell off tackles that a more experienced player, even a smaller guy, would have completed.
It’s exactly the sort of development that our fringe players need. It makes me long for a decent “A” competition. If that’s the type of team we could field during 6N, plus whilst resting first teamers for the league, it would be a decent watch.

Didn't see the stream so thanks everyone for the very useful feedback. A couple of players I was interested in pre match - Griff Evans at 2nd row & I have heard some very good reports about Macs Page who played at 13 last night I think. He is only 18 but apparently has something special.

Both centres showed up well GPR.  The focus on this forum has been more on Eddie James this season but I have to say that Max Page looked the real deal as well. I don't think we need to look elsewhere for centres if these two guys stick with us. Both scrum halves impressed as well. The second rows put in a good shift.

Makes me think we need some sort of Anlgo/Welsh competition during the international window to bring more of these guys through.

Macs flattened an opponent early on so I don't think strength is an issue, particularly as he's so young. His break was fantastic and he'd have run past the cover defence if he hadnt  run out of pitch. He's fast. He gives every appearance of being the real deal. But I would prefer to put that match in the context of a team performance which only lacked in terms of defensive organisation- not a surprise as it was a scratch team. I can't see why most of that 23 can't slot into a URC matchday 23 next season and put in a good performance. And if we are running a reduced squad, that is important.

If we see half the commitment, movement and speed of mind and action from Wales in an hour or two, we'll beat Italy easily.

Regarding Carwyn, totally agree. Real stand out performance. Got to carry that onto the URC now. Some really encouraging performances from the youngsters. Considering many of those Sarroes have been part of Premiership 23, that was a good result. I did expect more from our experienced players, steff T, WGJ and dinky. They didnt put their hands up far enough ladt night. I thought the wingers looked dangerous when given the chance, centers were fantastic considering theyre 18&20, replacement 9 was a live wire, ben williams carried well - not sure if he's 8 material. Good game. Thoroughly enjoyed and thanks for the link

Didnt catch the stream but Im gathering the guys were very much like the Tigers commentators when we won the friendly at Welford road. Agree its their stream yadda yadda but to not have a clue about the team you are playing or any of the players (as happened in that game) is a bit embarrassing for any rugby fan.

Bit harsh on Dinky there considering the age of the players around him I thought he mentored them well which may in turn restricted some of his own game play. WGJ for me has failed to flatter at all levels I thought he was a good move from Sale but its never materialised. The front rows did have a tough night against Sarries, who did have quite a bit of experience on the pitch but the pack did secure good ball most of the night.
Some really good prospects coming through and there are boys in the current U18's coming in as well who I have watched with Macs Page so the future isn't all doom and gloom.
