Scarlets to take on Barbarians in Phil Bennett Memorial GameScarlets will welcome rugby’s most famous invitational club, the Barbarians, to Parc y Scarlets on Saturday, September 16 for the Phil Bennett Memorial Game. Llanelli and Scarlets legend ‘Benny’ produced a host of memorable moments in the scarlet of his home town and the black and white hoops of the Baa-Baas, notably, his dazzling, side-stepping run that launched ‘the greatest try of all time’ against the All Blacks in 1973. Benny played 20 times for the Barbarians, the second highest by any Welshman and bettered only by another Llanelli great RH Williams, with 22 appearances. He also scored 181 points, played against Scotland, Fiji, Canada, Australia and New Zealand (twice) and captained the club on 10 occasions. The match will kick off at 2.30pm to sign off our 150-year celebrations and to cap a feast of rugby that day, Wales’ Rugby World Cup clash against Portugal will be shown on the giant screen in the Supporters Village afterwards. Scarlets have played the world-famous invitational side on three previous occasions, the last to officially open the Parc y Scarlets stadium in January 2009 when a capacity 14,500 crowd watched the home side run out 40-24 winners against a team containing the likes of All Blacks Anton Oliver and Ben Blair. Current Scarlets Jonathan Davies and Ken Owens were part of the Scarlets squad that day. The sides also met at Stradey Park in 1965 (28-15 to Barbarians) to mark the opening of the new changing rooms and dining hall at the ground and in 1972 (33-17 to Llanelli), as part of the club’s centenary celebrations. The visitors that day included Lions greats Fran Cotton and Fergus Slattery. Scarlets Executive Chairman Simon Muderack said: “It is a huge honour for the club to be welcoming the Barbarians to Llanelli once again for what promises to be a memorable occasion at the end of our 150-year celebrations. To be celebrating an incredible player like Phil who shone for both great clubs makes it that more special.” Scarlets Head Coach Dwayne Peel said: “To be able to host an iconic side like the Barbarians is fantastic for everyone at the Scarlets – players, coaches, staff and, of course, our supporters. It promises to be another great occasion ahead of the new season and a fitting way to remember a legend like Benny.” We will keep you updated on the stars who will line up for the Baa-Baas, with the tour party having an Australian flavour. Former Wallabies fly-half Berrick Barnes and centre Nathan Grey will be part of an all-Aussie coaching team along with ex-Australia assistant Laurie Fisher and Jason Gillmore, the current NSW Waratahs assistant coach. Barnes said: “Thank you to the Barbarians for this amazing opportunity to be a part of such an iconic rugby institution. The Barbarians represent all that is good about the game and I can’t wait to rip in alongside three incredible Aussie coaches and bring a bit of fun and flair to Parc y Scarlets on September 16.” Grey added: “Having had the honour of playing for the Barbarians in 2005 it was something I will always be grateful for and enjoyed thoroughly. Being asked to help coach the team with a great bunch of Aussie coaches is equally as exciting. An opportunity that I will grab with both hands and do my best to contribute to the fabric of the Baa-Baas ethos and playing style. I can’t wait.” Tickets start at £20 for adults and £8 for U16s and are on sale now at tickets.scarlets.wales or by ringing the Scarlets Ticket Office on 01554 292939.

It could be an interesting BaBaas side. Full of those not at RWC from the SH. They'll probably do a mini tour and take in some RWC games while they're at it. Can't see many NH players though as they'll be in pre season and friendlies.
The Wales v Portugal game starts at 16.45 so a chance for a big screen in one of the bars, ideal to make an afternoon of it. For those of us looking for an all dayer, we can cheer on Tonga at 20.00 in their game v Ireland.

I travelled back to Llanelli today through Felinfoel, having been to Swiss Valley Garden centre. I saw the flowers om Benny's Memorial statue, but it did not dawn on me, it was the anniversary of his death. When I got home , I realised ,and a huge moment of sadness overwhelmed me, totally, only lifting, when learned of this game against the Barbarians. What a wonderful, occasion it will be,and what a fitting tribute to greatest Scarlet I have seen, in my lifetime. Benny loved the freedom of these the of games, even though he could control a game , better than most, with expert generalship.
He is fondly remembered, with so much admiration ahd affection

Just to add to the above, just looked at the BBCWales Phil Bennett highlights. Seen some of the tries before LIVE, and many times on TV....BUT, they have me punching the air everytime, now with tears in my eyes. Such sadness laced with pride and emotion. The GREATEST !

He was devastating with his sidestep/ shimmy and his pace over 30 yards. So pleased I went to the Babas v AB game and witnessing THE try he started off . It was a full on Test. No messing around. Look forward to the game in September

Waw! Great you actually saw that game LIVE Reesy! I watched at home in Felinfoel, and instantly knew..hey this is special, apart from that AMAZING try by Edwards. Likewise, the 72 game at Stradey, you know, looking back it would have a special place in history.
Looking at the way Benny started Edwards try, it was pure instinctive skill and sheer genius, somthing the best in the world would find difficult to match. Yet he remained grounded, and humble all his life. Loyal to Felinfoel, and to the Scarlets.

Nah mate. It was his call to end things. For sure money was scarce for everyone, but he took the call based on his body telling him it was time.

If our new lineout coach can drill our jumpers to take on Aaron with success we will have gone a long way to improving one of our achilles heels.

Ticket sales are pretty shocking. There’s a lot of blocks where tickets haven’t even been sold. I don’t think you can blame the club for not advertising it either this time. No proper home game til November you’d expect better.

I think that the old glamour of the Ba Bas has gone. Playing the semi pro team Swansea recently probably helped in that regard. Some decent players mentioned but we could do with the full team being promoted on Social Media to generate interest

My dad was in South Wales Police in the early 70s and was telling me the other day that he was part of the Police side who used to give opposition to the Welsh side training at Waterston Cross. He said that he always used to lift his head as quickly as possible from the scrum to see Gareth Edwards pass to Benny. In his words he said that Benny used to 'float' and that his feet 'didn't seem to touch the floor'. A lovely way of putting it, I thought.

Unfortunately it is bang in the middle of the world cup, guaranteed some who would go will have plans for the world cup and unable to attend, whether thats in france or with family/friends . Also its the exact same time every local club is playing, im playing across the road in New Dock the same time so will be able to hear PYS but unable to attend due to the clash.
Normally there is around 7 or 8 of us that attend Scarlets games, sometimes more , and thats just my group, the juniors etc normally attend but they will probably be watching our game

| A mate of mine played first class rugby at flanker in the 70s. He said he would rather play against any No10 other than Benny. He said even Barry John could be tackled but Benny would make you look a fool with his sidestep, leaving you diving into thin air most times (well every time in fact).

A colleauges of mine played no7 for Ebbw Vale against Benny at Stradey. He said pretty much the same, leaving him clutching at thin air most of the time. He also said that after the match Phil was great spending time chatting to him and offering loads of encouragement. Clearly left a big impression.

Is there an update on Plumtree? Is he in France?
|
Posted By: NobbySosban

From Dwayne Peel's video earlier today, the following players are out:Ken Owens, Steff Evans, Scott Williams, Joe Roberts, Josh Macleod, Samson Lee, Alex Craig (until next week) & Carwyn Tuipolotu.
Ioan Lloyd is being prepared to start at 10, and Plumtree will play his first game for Scarlets (having already got a Wales cap!) - when you try to pick a team from what's left, there's really not much room for manoeuvre, so something like:
Johnny McNicholl, Tom Rogers, Jonathan Davies ©, Ioan Nicholas, Ryan Conbeer, Ioan Lloyd, Archie Hughes; Wyn Jones, Shaun Evans, Harri O'Connor, Morgan Jones, Jac Price, Iwan Shenton, Dan Davis, Taine Plumtree. Replacements: Lewis Morgan, Kemsley Mathias, Sam Wainwright, Ed Scragg, Luca Giannini, Kieran Hardy, Dan Jones, Tomi Lewis/Eddie James
A first run out for several players & coaches' ideas, against some Wallaby hopefuls & hometown favourites - should be a great occasion to honour Benny, looking forward to being there.

Not everyone involved, which feels sensible. It's still 5-6 weeks before the first competitive game.

I asked the Scarlets earlier in the week on Instagram and apparently it won't be televised. It's a shame to miss it but hopefully it's a good day out for the people who can attend.

Great honour for Haverfordwest and Hendy RFC to each have players selected for the famous Barbarian touring team. I hope they both have a good number of supporters at PYS to see their club socks being worn with the famous striped Barbarians kit.

I’m looking forward to seeing Ioan Lloyd have a runout at 10.
Harry Wilson is a quality 8 for the Barbarians. He’s a very powerful carrier. Daugunu is a dangerous runner in their backline.

I am not sure how often Llanelli/Scarlets have played the Barbarians, but I do recall seeing them once in or around 1965/66 when Barry John was just starting out on his career. For a half, he made mugs of the Baa-Baas and iirc Llanelli led at half time. Second half, the word must have gone out to what was probably an all-international test back row to mark the out-half and forget the rest! English wing-forward Taylor and the rest tightened up considerably, ant the Baa-Baas won in the end.

That's an intresting one Aber, but there will probably be someone on SF, to give an answer. Personally, I cannot remember too many fixtures.
Its a wonderful way to remember Benny, who played with such verve & exuberance for both teams. He would very happy . Looking forward to the game. Not expecting too much, early doors in season, but will prove a useful run out, and hopefully can enjoyable spectacle for all

Thanks to the wonders of Google, I can now confirm that the game was played on 2nd November 1965, and as I thought England flanker Bob Taylor was involved. The Barbarians won 28-15.

They played them in the 1972-3 centenary season, an evening game, won handily, I think we scored 30 pts. Dai Morris played for the Baabaas after a full day shift at work. Mike Burton was on hand also.

In the end a satisfactory result for an early season game. The Barbarians had allready convincingly beaten Northampton and Bristol. They tackled ferociously, were full of niggle so this was no classic Barbarians type game, which would not have served us well, in term in terms of pre season prep.
Scarlets controlled possession and territory well, in the second half, but we're not able to turn that dominance in to points. The forwards tried repeatedly to drive over the line but were repelled by stubborn Barbarians defence. It took a great interception and turn of pace from Eddie James to seal the win .
What concerned me, and most others at Parc, was the apalling line out , which malfunctioned all game. Shaun Evans, wonderful around the field, but struggles to throw long , which we continued to to, and failed to execute. If somthing is not working, why continue to compound the frustration with yet more inaccuracy. Of the top ball , is the best attacking weapon, but the major prerequisite, is to actually win the ball. Our new South African coach has a lot of work to do, together with the scrum which although OK, was creaky at times.
We should not undestimate the quality of the opposition , littered with quality Aussies , and therefore quite a few would have known each other, if not played regularly. In that context we can be happy with win with some decent performance, even though there remains plenty to work on.

And the cards came as a result of our pack's dominance. We had a young and very inexperienced pack on the pitch for most of the second half but they completely outplayed the baa-baas.

The eight forwards on the pitch for the last 20-25 minutes were: Kemsley, Lewis Morgan, Harri O' C, Jac Price, Scragg, Shenton, Ben Williams, Leatherbarrow. They did the hard stuff, got stuck in and utterly frustrated the Barbarians. That was the most impressive and encouraging bit of the game.

Ioan Lloyd is class, we got a gem there. Plumtree as well was superb. Lineout poor, scrum average. Wyn played tight head at start of game. Not sure where wainwright was. Backs look sharp, handling excellent at times and defence set up good against a big physical quality babas team full of fringe auusie test players who had 2 games under their belt. Thought back 3 had pace, Johnny mcnic seemed much quicker, and costelliw and Tom Rogers. Foxey looked fitter and lighter too. Jac price scraggy and Morgan showed up well against big mwn Ben Williams has skills to push on. Also enjoyed young players who came on. Final mention about 2 players who played for babas, rob evs and Aaron shingler. Nice seeing rob play but Aaron was excellent. What a player and person. Nice final game for him.. Thank you Aaron

I thought it was 4 YC's. Maybe I'm mistaken.
Was a great performance, lineout was very ropey and needs work because that would be far from good enough in a competition match. Aside from that though, there was plenty to be positive about. Let's hope it's an early sign of good things to come this season.
Shingler did well when he came on. It's a shame he decided to retire as I feel he has at least one more season of good rugby in him. Totally understand his reasoning though, given what he said about sometimes struggling to move the day after game day! Also would I'm sure have taken a sizeable pay cut had he signed a new contract, like many others have had to.

Nice words from N14 and Turkishrebel regarding Aaron Shingler. I spoke to him end of last season and clearly he feels his body has come to the end of line regarding , the demands of a whole season. It was however great to see him on the field today, for probably the last time. Outstanding Scarlet, and it has been such a pleasure to see him play over the years.

They were talking after the game on side line. Think it kicked off elsewhere. They were big and physical and thought we would get well beaten especially after they had beaten Northampton and Bristol well but we were the better team. Really surprised and quite optimistic. We will not win cups leagues for some time but and this is the thing we will play good quality rugby with young players who want to play for the club

I thought that was normal, even in my 20's. It was a toss up between which was worse, a sore body after the game or a sore head after the post match activities. My wife once said to me on a Sunday morning when I was struggling to get downstairs, "Why do you do this?" My answer, "Because it's fun and what we do." She shook her head and gave me the look that said I was wrong.

Maybe Rob was upset at the new upstart taking 'his' old place. If so, that passion came a season or 2 late for him and his ambitions.
