Not long to go before, for me, one of the great sporting contests takes place. Any other forum members interested? A treat awaits in September with the Rugby World Cup also taking centre stage. What do other members think about the decision by Europe that no LIV players can be selected? For my 4 penneth I think its pretty irrelevant because none of the usual suspects - Westwood, Poulter or Garcia have any real form whatsoever.

Yes, love the Ryder Cup. Really looking forward to it.

European golf is in a bit of a fallow period right now. Maybe half a dozen players capable of holding their own against a strong American side.

Could be a whooping again tbh.

Gentlemen - for shame!!!!! Rory, Rahm, Fleetwood, Hovland, Fitzpatrick, Rose should form the basis of a decent team. Combined with passionate Italian support we will give the buggers a run for their money!!!!

You named the half dozen!

Not sure Rose is going to be a value add, and it depends which Rahm turns up.

You spotted my weakness there Wil - for sure once we get down past our top 5 guys they Americans have 4/5 for every one of our boys in the top 50. Rose is a proven performer on the big occasion & Rahm needs to find his leadership role within the team - the guy who turned up at the Masters will do me.

I could add Tyrell Hatton to my list who, with his temperament, will guarantee some sparks flying. I rely on the fact that most European victories have come against the odds.

Good signs for the European team over the weekend with Hovland showing he is the best player in the World at the moment at the Tour Championship finale. Also strong showings from Rory, Fleetwood, Rahm, Fitzpatrick & Hatton.

Well the teams are decided. Young Aberg at 23 & a pro since June will get the headlines. What a rise. Clearly he is some player winning the award for the best college golfer on the American circuit but this is something else.

When he hits his first tee shot his knees will be shaking - could we be seeing the next big thing. i will be watching.

I admire your positive mindset GPR.

I’m afraid it’s going to be a strong defeat ( with hopefully one or two youngsters showing they have got what it takes).

Hope I’m wrong obviously- with many American friends a whooping will ‘ feed that beast’.

I think the core of the European team are in form and can carry us to victory this time and if Luke takes a day to Sicily I'm sure there are some 28 handicappers who can make the Yanks an offer they can't refuse LOL

Good news that all 12 members of the Ryder Cup team made the cut at Wentworth. Slightly worrying is the form of Rory, our talisman, who is having trouble off the tee. Get a good week of practice in Rory lad & sort it out.

Well it hasn't taken long for Ludwig Aberg to show his colours. Leading after 3 rounds on 16 under at Wentworth. I watched some of his holes yesterday & I have to say that he appears to have everything. He is longer off the tee that Rory which is no mean feat & his pace of play is refreshingly swift & accompanied by a very calm temperament.

If our American friends were wondering who he was they are about to find out.

Wentworth isn't the widest course I have played, and Rory seemed to turn it around on the last 2 days.
The format favours good putters and that is often unpredictable in 2 man teams.

There is no hiding in the singles though, but I give Europe a fair "putter's" chance as opposed to puncher's chance, as Poulter and Garcia are no longer around.

Yes 12 under over the final two rounds against 1 under the first two. Grant Fox's son wins with a great final round. Aberg going into the final round at 16 under and a two shot lead learned a very big lesson about pressure golf slipping out of contention. His prodigious talent has been talked up for a few weeks so time to find out about his temperament - my money is on him bouncing back in Rome but hey I am an eternal optimist. Ouch

Really looking forward to this & it's helped by the fact that Wales aren't playing that weekend in the RWC.

Have got Sky Go set up in the office for the Friday & then will be on the sofa for the Saturday, followed by pub Sunday.

Fantastic day for Europe.

USA up in 3 games well in to the four ball’s and didn’t win one. Rahm and Rose were superb, equally most of the US team looked off their game a bit, but most importantly they looked totally shot by the end.

Great day without doubt - Europe's big boys turned up big time while the Americans seemed quite subdued. Nothing dropped for them on the greens which must change. Talk of illness in the camp leading to some energy issues. I knew we could rely on our Sicilian brothers to lend a hand.

Amazing result this morning for Hovland and Åberg - a 9 & 7 win.

ATM - Europe up in 2 more matches, USA in one with a few holes to go.

So - 3-1 to Europe this morning makes it 91/2 to 2 1/2 overall.

Surely Europe can't lose from that position - can they?

It's clear that there's a motivation issue with some in the US team...can't be helped by the scoreboard of course.
Asking why they aren't paid to play in this event (Cantlay and his mate Schaufle) is undermining his team and skipper.

Watching Scotty Sheffler in tears after losing 9&7 suggests it's not him. It's the appropriate reaction to a record defeat. Where his golf has been of late regrettably though...he's way off on his usual immaculate short game.

Sheffler's putting, bearing in mind he is World No 1, is woeful & we can only imagine how good he would be if he got it sorted. The nonsense about not wearing the cap and being paid is pretty typical of many in the American team who really don't get that there is golf outside the US.

Some of the decisions made by players & management suggest to me that, despite the rhetoric, this tournament is something of a side issue for them. For instance no American player has played at the Italian Open in the last two years despite it being played at Marco Simone. Add in the fact that most of the team took 4 weeks off golf in the build up. Would they take that route before a major - absolutely not. Luke Donald & his team have played a blinder so far in preparation & motivation. The constant theme of the European hero Seve is just one of the clever things.

I see Rory got quite excited with Cantlay's caddie for running across his line before the final putts on the 18th - even confronting him in the car park. Rory epitomises for me the desire to win being shown by all involved with Europe. He hasn't quite found his A game yet but even his B+ is usually good enough.

If Luke Donald had been offered a 5 point lead going into the singles on Friday morning he would have bitten your hand off. However a word of caution - nothing is won until its won. Donald has top loaded his singles format so the big beasts of the European team need to show up one more time.

The 3-1 to the US yesterday afternoon keep the door open a little. Beyond Rahm, Rose, McIlroy, Hovland, Fleetwood and maybe one or two others, the US have a head to head advantage. Both teams have to put out their big guns in the first games of course.

Hats off to Justin Rose. He’s been magnificent. Not something I predicted ( then again my predictions are generally woeful!)

Yes Rose's experience has coaxed the best out of McIntyre who looked like a rabbit in the headlights over the first few holes which is pretty understandable. Most of the required 4 points need to come from the five you have listed along with Hatton who is a fine player.

Got a little close there, but the big guns did their bit, and it was enough.  Donald did well as the captain, and they may want to keep him for NY in 2 years time as that will be a real challenge.

Fantastic performance by Europe's big boys. Sheffler's problems from 8 foot in surfaced again & kept Rahm in the game. Hovland, Hatton, McIlroy never in doubt. Rose fought to the end against their best player & Fleetwood & McIntyre closed it out. A huge lesson is there for the Americans but if they are true to form they will ignore it as usual.

Hopefully Donald will be retained for Beth Page Black in two years which will, as usual, be a huge test of character with US fans no doubt showing us a lot of the worst side of the game. The course set up made a massive difference. The Americans never really came to terms with hitting the fairway with penal rough lining both sides. It was not as if the fairways were narrow, they weren't. Perhaps they should learn to make more of their tournament venues challenge players to use all 14 clubs instead of the usual driver/3 wood wedge putter routine.

Whatever the machinations it was compelling viewing & huge entertainment. To see my 86 year old neighbour ( round for some Sunday roast) screaming "get in there" to one of Tommy's putts late on made my day.
