ULSTER
Dan McFarland has been released by the SRU to start work as head coach with Ulster as of this morning (Mon 20 Aug). Simon Easterby was temporarily drafted from the IRFU to manage the team ahead of McFarland's arrival, so it'll be interesting to see how quickly the reins change hands, especially as our first game of the season is at the Kinspan/Ravenhill - having two former Scarlets in their coaching set-up could benefit their preparation, but a switch of leadership leaves them potentially volatile so close to the opening game. Gloucester beat them relatively easily in Belfast (you can see the full game on their Facebook page), and new outside half Billy Burns was injured in that game against his old club. UPDATE: Ulster have also re-signed Ireland centre Stuart McCloskey until 2022, and expect Springbok flanker Marcell Coetzee back this weekend after a 12-month injury lay-off. SOUTHERN KINGS
Double announcement this morning - they have secured ISUZU SA as their headline shirt sponsor, and are now the first black-owned rugby franchise in South Africa, also creating an academy for the Eastern Cape's young talent - big day for them.

Interesting thread. Ulster in Belfast are no easy opposition. If we are near our best we will win. They still, for me, are a bit lightweight in the front 5 and have not successfully replaced their 9/10 axis. Burns doesn't cut it for me. I would love to see our first half team against Bath as the starters for Ulster. Our pack for that game hopefully will be :- 1. Rob 2. Ken 3 Samson 4. Ball 5. Cummins 6. McLoud 7. Davis 8. Casseim Bench 16. Elias 17. Price/Evans 18. Werne 19. Bulbring 20. Kennedy. As well as the injured list I have excluded Cubby as he had a busy summer; the only other player I also think may fit in this category is Hadleigh so lets start the season fully loaded and send out a message to our competitors.

EDINBURGH
Head coach Richard Cockerill has downplayed their chances for this season, saying that they have a long way to go to match Glasgow and the top teams in the PRO14. Having appointed Stuary McInally as their captain for the new season, Cockers has also signed Scotland centre Matt Scott, Kiwi fly-half Simon Hickey, Glasgow scrum-half Henry Pyrgos, Newcastle back Juan Pablo Socino and Scotland back-rowers John Barclay and Luke Hamilton.
Not sure where the Cockmeister is getting his player budget figures from, mind. ![]() Edited by NobbySosban - 22 August 2018 at 4:37pm |

DRAGONS
For their Thursday night pre-season friendly against Gloucester, Bernard Jackman has named 10 Welsh capped players in his starting XV. Is that the most ever? ![]() 15 Jordan Williams 14 Dafydd Howells 13 Tyler Morgan 12 Jack Dixon 11 Hallam Amos 10 Josh Lewis 9 Rhodri Williams 8 Lewis Evans 7 Aaron Wainwright 6 Huw Taylor 5 Cory Hill (c) 4 Brandon Nansen 3 Leon Brown 2 Richard Hibbard 1 Ryan Bevington Elliot Dee, Nic Cudd, Tavis Knoyle & Gavin Henson all on an extended bench of 14 replacements. Glaws have named a strong side, with Banahan, 36, Ben Morgan and Danny Cipriani at 10, plus Polledri & Own Williams among the replacements. Expect Robin Davey to predict a championship season if Dragons finish within 7 points. ![]() |

Jackman will come under increasing pressure if that selection don't put up a decent show. Fixtures have given him a good start to the season and anything less than 12 points from the first 3 games will be unacceptable. He is about to find out how easy he had it last year.

Their backline looks decent but we can take most of the credit for that, Sam Davies included.

Saracens in pretty much full warpaint- ie with most of their pack- will ensure that the Ospreys backline is completely irrelevant.

TBH all they look good at is 12,13,14. The rest are good but not that good. Overhype once again.

I wouldn't take any one of their start XV over ours. The only osprey I would welcome would be AWJ

Starting I would take AWJ & Scott - the only 2. Of course George has the ability but needs to find the consistency.
