Went to a food & wine tasting yesterday and pushed the geographic boundaries a bit further.

Star of the show was a Macedonian red. Called Barovo, possibly from Domaine Tikres Barovo. It was very full-bodied and packed a punch not only with the taste as it weighed in at 15%. I was told the grapes used but they were a new and seemingly Slavic (I think) names. Went with pork cheek.

Another much lighter red was Little Beauty Pinot Noir from a guy that used to be senior at Cloudy Bay itself. He’s found a place and backing to do his own things and this red was a jolly accompaniment to a light Emmental soufflé.

A Heidi Schoche Söhne Blaufrankisch Austrian red was fun with duck breast, having followed an Austrian white, Grüner Veltliner - nice with the sea bass.

A good fun evening and horizons broadened

Well done on your self-deprivation and hope you’re feeling the benefits of the abstinence.

Nearly forgot the reddish Sauternes 1994 Chateau de Fargues. It was a very good note on which to finish with the dessert

Chef James Martin bought a vineyard in the Languedoc during lockdown. The 3 generations of the family that are running it for him include the 26 year old who has been a real star. By allowing him to experiment with some of the grapes remaining after the best had been picked, they’ve spent time blending grape types and quantities.

The 100% Syrah red is ok, however, the white sounds very interesting, although I’ve not yet tasted it. The white is mostly Chardonnay although is blended with Marsanne, a variety new to me. It was when he and the son blended them, the taste they got reminded them of the ever so lovely Montrachet Burgundies yet at a much more modest price.

Thanks to the chance given to him, the son’s talent and James’s guidance has lead to the vineyard winning 19 gold medals in 6 months.

On line, the wine is about £15 a bottle. In restaurants, he mentioned one place charging 10 times that although £50 is more normal.

James said, with young wine folk, it’s like young chefs. You have to give them a chance to show their talent. They’ll crash and burn sometimes. Mostly, if they’ve the talent, they’ll do extremely well.

Just ordered 6 whites from vinohero and with 10% off for the first order, it’s £81 including delivery by DPD. Will report findings of due diligence in due course.

Yes that’s the one. He’s hilarious live if you get the chance to catch a show. Saw him last autumn in Ipswich and he’s doing another tour this autumn, too. Some great music - he’s a decent guitarist - as well as heaps of laughter.

I’m more dab than dab hand in the kitchen. Consumption end of the process is my strength.

The James Martin white wine Chardonnay Marsanne blend order arrived this morning. Not bad for an order placed late Thursday night.

A very pleasing purchase. It goes well with curry - a salmon something left over from last night. It goes well with a toasted tea cake. It doesn’t taste like chardonnay so the blend has worked very well.

Tasting it was one of the extremely rare high points of watching Ireland’s demolition of a distant second best host under the new chief coach that the Chiefs rejected. Hope for better times ahead.

Listrac is a small satellite area near Bordeaux, on the Medoc, about 9 miles north west of the city.

It is rare to see any of that on sale in the UK shops, although having looked at Majestic, there are two - one at £13.99 (mixed 6 price) and the other at £23.32. The cheaper 2013 is from a year that’s a tread with care vintage, due to poor weather. the more expensive Chateau Clarke doesn’t sound that French and is from 2010.

Be interested in the feedback if anyone tries either. I might if they’re still around in due course as and when I place another order with them.

I’m trying some en vrac from 2000 bottled about 2003 and has managed to survive all this time. it’s a light 12%, as was the norm at that time. At a little less than €3 a litre, it was a snip at the time and its quality has endured.

From Wikipedia

Lying 15 kilometres (9 mi) northwest of the city of Bordeaux, the village is best known as one of the six appellations of the great wine-growing regions of the Médoc. In a region where a mere 20 metres (70 ft) can be the difference between a great wine and an average one, its distance from the beneficial effect of the Garonne means that its wines are not as highly rated as those of the other appellations. Nonetheless it is home to many vineyards whose blends of cabernet sauvignonmerlot and cabernet franc can age over a long period
