Ok this thread is inevitable.....so I'll ask the question 2 ways
1) what would be your match day team (plus subs)
2) what team do you think gats and co will select?

Ill start the ball rolling by selecting the team I think he will pick with 2 names down for the most contentious positions

15 hapenny
14 north
13 Foxy/BOD/Tuilagi- I really dont know who he'll pick here. id pick foxy.
12 Roberts/BOD/Foxy
11 cuthbert
10 sexton
9 spikey
8 toby/heaslip
7 warbs
6 dan the man
5 POC
4 AWJ
3 Adam
2 Hartley
1 Healy
reps; geth, hibbard, stevens?parling/evans,,tips, murray, farrell, and 1 of the centres?

seems to me the hardest competition is at centre? you have the lions pairing of 09 with the doc and BOD combining so well, you have the brilliant foxy and the human rhino tuilagi? trouble is it seems only 1 is an inside centre and he has a limited style......who knows could he consider moving the mighty BOD to 12 at some stage?

your thoughts?

There are always a few suprises as players put their hands up during the provincial matches.

Based on current form and the style of play I expect Gatland to follow I'd go:

15 hapenny
14 north
13 BOD
12 Roberts
11 Bowe
10 sexton
9 Mike
8 heaslip
7 warbs
6 Obrien
5 POC
4 AWJ
3 Adam
2 Hibbard
1 Healy

reps; geth, Hartley, Cole, parling, tips, Youngs, farrell, Foxy

History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.

I can understand it when you big up your own (Ulster/Irish) players - but Ben Youngs rather than Spikey Mikey? You must be having a laugh! BTW - though I have immense respect for BOD as a player, he's on the downward slope physically - so our Jon 'foxy' Davies is my choice for the 13 shirt.

I think that's the closest.

Anyone watch The rugby club last night? The pundits selections were amusing - they had croft and heaslip both in the backrow. Poor Sam.

Halfpenny

Bowe
Foxy
Doc Roberts
North

Sexton
Phillips

Healy
Hibbard
Adam Jones
Alun Wyn Jones
Paul O' Connell

Sean O' Brien
Sam Warburton (c)
Faletau

Subs:
T.Youngs, Jenkins, Cole, Evans, Tipuric, B.Youngs, Farrell, BOD

Thinking behind this: the guys in bold seem ALMOST to be certain starters - they certainly figure in most teams posted so far. Most of the pack picks itself - I'd have Faletau rather than the out-of-form Heaslip, and it's a bit dificult to choose between the power and carrying of O'Brien as against the speed and ball-skills of Tipuric - could go either way IMO. Lydiate could yet make the team, but is lacking game time. Healey, O'Brien and Faletau are carriers; AWJ and POC are maulers par excellence; the front row, led by Adam, will be powerful. Tips to come on if the game is fast and loose.

Choosing the backs is trickier; I know that Doc and BOD were excellent together in SA 4 years ago, but even though BOD is one of the greatest players of all time, he's surely slowing down after the battering his body has taken over the years - so I'd favour Foxy - who's fast and powerful. (I won't be surprised, or spit in my beer, if we end up with BOD and Tuilagi, though.)

Bowe, Maitland or Cuthbert? I've gone with Bowe for his experience and strike rate, though Cuthbert is also an ace finisher. Maitland, though quick, lacks experience.

No doubt between now and the first test we'll all be changing some players, because of injury or form considerations. It should be a great tour, though!

Will North be starting especially as he doesn't attempt to tackle.

We may see Warbs at 6 and O'Brien at 7 but I think this will be the test side.

First time for everything if not, but the highlighted part would gather a lot of press attention.

I know the argument of selecting the best side to win tests and the series but there is also the feature that it is the Lions, the joining of the four home nations, and accordingly we may well see a couple of more dubious selections used to include English players. Maybe even a Scot.

I reckon Gats will go for Tuilagi in midfield to carry the hard yards. Croft in as well. I prefer SOB but think that Crott's line out work will be a factor.
