Having watched the Wales game last night, I noticed that 7 out of the starting 15 had come via the Scarlet academy and it got me pondering, what on earth has happened to Kevin George? I realise he's no longer with the Scarlets but he had a fantastic record of delivering young talent, as last night showed. Also our current squad is over 80% home grown, so given he didn't leave to take up a new post / role with another team, why was he released?

There was a full review into the academy(nothing to do with new PRA), which started at the end of last season after complaints were received from players and parents regarding their treatment whilst with the academy.
Things like preferential treatment to those who went to Coleg Sir Gar, Not following procedures - each player is meant to have an individual game reviews during the week after each game, a sizeable amount weren't getting any feedback until the week of the last game (5+ game reviews in one) and then it was by someone who wasn't directly involved with them, 16 West coach doing U18 reviews etc. One of the biggest issues was for those who were contracted, there's a break clause at the end of year 2, end of U18's Year 13, Uni application time. Players were being told in the October they'll be staying on for the full 5 years then after the last RAG game in Feb/Mar they were being called in and released. Which as you can imagine screwed over these boys who only applied locally because of what they were told. Add to that there were issues with promising to help get players into Uni's specifically Swansea/Met and nothing being done. One case specifically, the Uni responding to a parent stating the player in question wasn't on the list the Scarlets provided prior to christmas.
Pretty sure everyone can fill in the gaps re Kev.

Just being devils advocate, there must be very good reasons for all the above. Be nice to get the the side of the coin (not that we will of course)

Welcome to the forum Stradeyboyo. Like you I spent years in the shadows...!
Not sure what Kevin is up to these days, and the logic for him leaving is probably one for the Scarlets management.
It felt like just time for a change from an outsiders eye, not sure but Kevn was probably there for 15+ years and oversaw some great talent coming through.
Having said that players like Josh Adams and Gareth Thomas could be considered as actually being released from/by our Academy, and Sanjay was actually never in the academy. Also not sure 80% of the current squad being home grown is covered through the Academy.

We need our two Tongans of course. But their presence is not quite as critical as it was before last week's game. We might in any case not be planning to take them to South Africa ?

Shame it looks like Vaea Fifita won’t be available to us at the start of the URC following his yellow reviewed up to red in the last few mins of the Scotland match.

Caleb Salmon & Iestyn Gwilliam on the bench are academy too Drovers have Harry Thomas(last season’s U18’s captain) & Macs Page plus Harri Doel is always worth keeping an eye on
|
Not sure Caleb is in the academy. | He was in senior academy was let go but may be in extended? |
He's a Quins player right now, but no doubt still in in contention

Great to hear.
Also not surprised re Evan Jones. He’d be a good player to sponsor

Macs Page scored two first half tries for the Drovers. The second was a walk-in but the first was rather special. I'm not sure how the half break was made but once he had a bit of space, a shimmy and acceleration carried him clear. There were alot of rough edges to his play- dropped the ball in contact a couple of times but was prepared to have a jackal in the rucks and to generally do the hard work. It's harder to judge a hooker but Harry Thomas' throwing in was at least on a par with senior Welsh hookers , he's lively in the loose( got a couple of ruck turnovers) and when he was playing the Drovers scrum was equal to Merthyr's.
The Drovers are a well coached efficient side and just the sort of team to introduce young players into senior rugby. Next season may be when they step up.
