I think it just needs a referee to call it once early on in a game and the players will respond.

Correct ! I attended a meeting last night where Rob Yemen, the WRU Match Officials Manager led a training topic on the "new" laws ... This theory was supported, with video evidence of the first few games of the season highlighting it. One problem that reared up was the new Scrum engagement call of "Crouch, Touch, Set ... A few of us pointed out that in past experience, front rows shouted "SET" after the touch, to let the "shunters" know they were "set" for engage .. you can imagine the potential for early engagement with this happening ! It was decided that this , if managed properly in the pre-match talk, would be overcome by packs "choosing" a new word ! Also while I'm on the subject of New Law Clarification, the 90 second kick law ONLY applies to conversions NOT to penalties, these remain at 60 seconds. The 90 seconds starts "from when the try is scored" unless a defender kicks the ball away, then it starts from the time the ball is retrieved. Apparently this Law was brought in to try & stop the Try scoring celebrations of punching or kicking the ball into the crowd, thereby eating at the clock !

I think refs so far have been to chicken to punish players who clearly take longer than 5s to get the ball away after being warned. I've yet to see any ref blow up for this - but what is the punishment? Is it a free kick, or a scrum to the non-offending team? I hope to see the new law applied more strictly in future, as that will make for more exciting games, and will also (probably) favour the Scarlets!

JP Doyle did it last weekend ! Sanction: Scrum (non offending team) Interestingly, we've noticed a new tactic, the call "use it" triggers a counter-ruck by the defending team, as any disruption to the Half Back that prevents him using the ball within 5 seconds, gains a turnover !

Thanks for that clarification. I didn't see the Doyle 'whistle' - and hope other refs will be prepared to use the sanction as well.

I suppose this comment goes in the general forum section but the over-complication with rules (or application of the rules) in Union is quite off-putting in terms of attracting new fans and players.
It's just needless sometimes as well.
