This is a bit baffling.

We probably have much lower salary bills already than teams in France, England and Ireland - so what's the point? Is there going to be a limit on what individuals receive? If so - more will go to France.

Or are the WRU going to provide more money to the regions, but see this cap as a way to prevent all of thet being spent on inflated salaries?

Not sure of the reasoning behind this...Confused

The only advantage I see (as we are already unable to compete with the French) is that players agents will have no way to push negotiation beyond a point. So this will make signing decisions easier and quicker to decide on.

The question is will it be a squad ceiling (eg £3m per annum), Player maximum (eg £500,000 per annum) or X% of generated income at a Region? (or x% of regional money that has arrived via the WRU)

It doesn't make much sense to me either to be honest, unless to do something along the lines of what you have already suggested. Maybe, if a cap were introduced, the WRU would then top up those regular internationals, in an attempt to keep them playing in Wales?

If the cap say was 4m, would that be less or more than what the regions currently opperate at? If it is less, would this mean the WRU giving less to the regions on an annual basis, and then using that extra saving to top up the international players?

BBC news is just reporting that the four welsh regions have agreed a salary cap. No news on how much or if WRU funding on top to keep certain players would be included. Could have a mjor impact on our ability to keep players in Wales.

Another example of how clueless the union is at running the professional game in Wales....

Hey guys out of the top 6 nations in europe, even though only scotland clubs spend less than u on salaries in general we are going to introduce a salary cap..

As long as the salary cap is in line with the Premiership's of £4m then I can't see a problem.

How do we know the salary cap won't be  more than what is being spent now?  This could be a good thing (possible??)

There's obviously more to this, a lot more, just a matter of time before we find out exactly what.

I know that the WRU have got other announcements to be made at the start of next year too regarding juniors and mini rugby.  Maybe this is just the start.

A salary cap seems pointless if the regions can't actually afford to pay the maximum limit anyway, and if it is reducing the maximum amount paid by any region already we may as well start waving goodbye to our players now!

I can see something behind this... Remember, (sal,) this is RRW, not the WRU...

Maybe this will put pressure on the French to introduce a cap, because, let's be honest, as long as our cap is in line with England's, which it will be, more than likely then it won't affect us anyway...

In your rush to put the boot in, you - and other posters - have missed the point that it isn't the WRU who intend to impose a cap.

This could instantly decide the future of Jon Davies and Rhys Thomas then - depending on when this is introduced.

Salary caps are for the good of the game IF they are introduced throughout the Northern Hemisphere. While France can play lunatic wages, they'll continue to be the Premier League of the game while we're the Bundusliga. Also, much like the Tory lot protecting the pension-robbing, tax dodging folks of the City, the French will also never play on a level playing field as the rest of Europe (even though you've got clubs - Stade Francais - lurching from financial crisis to crisis.

Oh, well.

The regions have done this not the WRU.

Therefore they are basically saying to the Union - this is what we can afford - if you want your players to stay in Wales then do something about it.

I think.
