My range of musical likes is a wide as my belly, better not mention my "NOW" albums or Roy Orbison, or Slim Whitman, LOLLOLLOL

In 1972, Roy Bergiers scored that try and said "that was for you lofty"

you are right about the musical snobs.... loads of them on this forum.. if they are mainstream then they are s41t according to quite a few...

They always think they're so cool and eccentric because they claim to like bands nobody else has heard of. I bet most of them slip on a Take That CD in the solitude of their cars.

That is spooky,,,,

Me neither. I'm a big fan of The Beatles.

I wonder who these music snobs are?

Im not sure mate, no way i (or you imo, maybe PearlJam like) can be accused of being music snobs. A look at my CD collection will confirm that. I just happen to think certain bands like Queen, Evevesence and especially Nickleback are not very good.

I've always advocated the merits of early Queen on this forum, and still big up The Quo:) But I think the mentions of Das Schnauzer/Tonlist Skit/Vokse Opp Du Stikk/Pleb Decke etc might have left the impression of music snobbery here and there.

I'm definitely a music snob, proud of it too Big smile

Couple of points, liking the Beatles doesn't mean you're not a music snob, every person that's ever heard them should admit to liking them.

While I'm here I'd better post something on topic I suppose. I like "epic" sounding music, music that sounds really large and moving but Evanescence are just really bad (cheesy) epic.

I caught some of the same programme Lofty that you saw on sunday afternoon , by 'some' I mean 30 seconds and by 'caught' I mean endured Cry

It's a tough question because in my head I don't think I am a music snob but I can see why to most people I would be.

Couple of points which I would think are relevant though:
1) Don't listen to any current popular music - Who is Lady Gaga and how can a baby sell so many records?
2) I completely right off any musical genre that I think is too samey - metal/reggae/ska/emo
3) Never listen to radio - a complete pet hate of mine, I can't stand radio at all between the annoying dj's to the drivel they play which takes up 90% of the airwaves.
4) My music taste is made up mainly by bands that the average person has never heard of. (Bearing in mind that Joe Public has no idea who Arcade Fire or Bon Iver are but there we go.)

What makes you (or anyone) a music snob?
Having an eclectic taste and constantly exploring new and obscure artists in favoured genres, whilst making a point of seemingly looking down on more publicly popular types of music and acts. Possibly not wanting anyone else to like your stuff? I count myself in that by the way!
I love and have a fairly extensive knowledge of German and Italian 70's prog rock, most of which nobody around here will have heard of and it gives me a lovely bit of musical eliteness in my own mind, and I like ABC's "Lexicon Of Love" album:) I am a music snob and proud, i'm going to listen to Premiata Forneria Marconi nowWink

I've seen Bon Iver, I can't "get" Arcade Fire though, I have tried.

I love encouraging people to like the stuff I do. The world would be a better place if more people listened to Peter Broderick and Olafur Arnaulds.

I don't look down on people who like "publicly popular music". But I would query their opinion on music if they only like mainstream stuff and don't explore other types, dismissing alternative music because of low sales etc.

I had this conversation with a mate in the pub after the game on Saturday. His point was that every music that is "critically acclaimed" and wins awards must be good. He just couldn't get the fact that a critics / music journalists view of music was no more subjective than you or I.
