Ok we may have to change our plans - see below communication from Ryanair. I will assess our options & get back to all soon. I do love a challenge.Ouch

Hello Gareth,

We’re sorry to inform you that there has been a time change to your Ryanair booking. Please note that as a result of this time change your flight(s) may depart on a different date than originally booked. Please find new details of your flight(s) below. If you’re travelling with others, please inform them of the changes. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

However, you now have several options you can avail of, including accepting the new departure time, changing your flight for free, or applying for a full refund of the cost of your ticket.

Some options for consideration -

Option one - we accept the new timing & try to arrange for collection at PYS at 1200 hours instead of the intended 0730 hours. Downside - long day Friday!!!!!

Option two - we try to travel to Stansted on the Thursday at a reasonable time & stay close to the airport. Downside extra £50-£60 for hotel plus beverages.

Option three - Stansted to San Sebastian via Madrid leave at 1335 hours so same pick up time at PYS arrive 2050 hours with 2.5 hours stop over. Downside extra £100 + & latish arrival at Biarritz. San Sebastian/Biarritz is 25 miles & cost would be about 25 euros for transfer.

Option four - Gatwick to Bordeaux at 0810 hours arrive 1050 hours with Easyjet. 2 hour transfer from Bordeaux with cost of transfer about 80 euros each. No real benefit over Option One except a two hour difference in leaving PYS - another long day with two long transfers.

Thoughts please & of course any other suggestions.

From 10th November, the new entry procedure for travellers coming from outside the EU and entering the EU takes effect.

It will need fingerprints and a photo of you as part of the entry process.

The amount of time taken to process these extra requirements varies from one estimate to another and will depend on individual familiarity with technology that’s used.

Using smaller airports will help and where there isn’t that choice, it’s best to allow much longer than usual for any connecting flights. Flights with different providers are a big risk in situations like this, as there’s no responsibility on the carrier providing the second flight to do anything other than sell you a ticket for another flight.

You’re welcome Gareth.

The simple attraction of landing so close to your destination and it being a small airport makes the Ryanair to Biarritz flight, even though it’s less convenient a departure time than others, still a great option all else being equal.

We are holding off booking our 2025 ferry trips to France until we see what each of the ports are doing re their capacity to process car passengers. St Malo has loads of space and plenty of booths for Frontier Control officers. Cherbourg is ok but Caen has so little room it is very difficult to see how they can create more capacity to get travellers processed.

It may even be that we give up the ferries and revert to Eurotunnel, although arrive at very early hours to minimise queuing.

BTW, when we were last in Bayonne, we met the President/Chairman of Biarritz airport in hospitality at the stadium. A lively chap who speaks great English.

Yes indeed Steve - the unanimous feeling is to accept the new flight times to Biarritz. Some understandably would prefer to get to Stansted on Thursday evening to get a night's sleep, others who have work commitments etc cannot do that.

It will be educational to see how long it takes in arrivals/customs.

For those of us in London the Bordeaux option is great.

Another alternative I was contemplating was Ryanair from Stanstead 11:15am to Toulouse 14:05pm, then a 16:33 train from Toulouse ($30) arriving at 8pm in Bayonne.

You then can get the flight direct from Biarriz to Stanstead back on the Monday.

Not v useful for anyone setting off from PYS but the 6:15am from Standstead means a 3:40am train from Liverpool Street which risks Friday being a dud evening Dead

We have settled on keeping the 0630 hours flight change from Stansted with two options for travel - firstly the nuclear option of leaving PYS at 2330 on Thursday. Some of us are taking the sedate option which means travelling from Carmarthen to Stansted by train on Thursday PM & starting the tour a little early with an overnight stay ay the Hilton. Why not join us in Stansted on Thursday & get the early Friday flight direct into Biarritz.

I am impressed with the Hilton as they serve breakfast from 0400 hours so we will be raring to go at departures at around 0430 hours.

We are now 11no confirmed for the trip. At the moment there is flight availability at about £150 return & availability at Hotel le Bayonne at about £325 for doubles & £248 for singles. Spoken to the minibus driver ( 16 seater) Gregg who suggests a 2300 hour start from PYS on Thursday 5th December.

Will discuss with Dave Healey - stadium manager - about the plan to leave a few cars at PYS with regard to access around 2300 hours & will confirm. At the moment we have 2no confirmed as travelling independently to Stansted by rail on Thursday PM. Judging by the amount of sleep I got in Treviso that is one of my shrewder decisions.

I have had contact with the Bayonne ticket office. The website for online tickets is not yet open for the Scarlets game. I have a direct link to someone who deals with requests for 10 tickets plus. Our party require 11no. If anyone would like me to add them to our order let me know.

Ah, Bayonne! I have a very particular memory of this town - my apologies in advance if I posted this story before.

Well, then... the family were in the car, driving north from a holiday in Spain. As lunchtime approached, we decided to turn off into Bayonne for lunch.

BIG mistake! Unknown to us, the Bayonne fiesta had reached its climax the previous night. First thing we saw was a guy lying legless on the pavement... he had apparently been shopping, and the contents of his plastic bag were spilling out around him... there was a small slope, and his cabbage was rolling downhill ever so slowly - he reached out for it, but couldn't catch it. He was too far gone.

In the town centre, the road was divided in half by a 5m high fence, which was pretty malodorous - as was most of the town. The restaurants had basically run out of food - all I could get was a portion of chips. So I don't plan to return to Bayonne any time soon!

(You'll be fine, though - it's not fiesta season.)
