Best mate & his partner coming round tomorrow for a meal to celebrate his 64th. Starting with cheese souffles which I practised last week & were OK/good; main course a simple fillet steak with field mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, fried onions & jacket potatoes boosted by Diane's homemade peppercorn sauce.

Debating whether to open a bottle of red which my daughter sourced from her local family run wine retailers in Bristol - Corks. She often gets me something on special occasions and the owner sums up my needs from her description perfectly normally. So perfectly I am having 2nd thoughts on this sharing idea. This wine is called Anel Reserva 2020, winemaker Marcio Lopes from the Douro Valley, 14.5% made traditonally with foot treading & stored in used barrels.

Might be better to err on the side of caution to make sure the special wine goes to one or more truly appreciative set(s) of taste buds.

Made a seafood chowder last night with homemade seafood stock. Have to say it was worth the extra work for the stock.

Menu this weekend to include Rock stein's seafood gratin, our first BBQ of the season with homemade burgers with brioche buns, our own lettuce, tomato & bacon & slow roast shoulder of lamb on Sunday. Could be my opportunity to the  Anel Reserva 2020, winemaker Marcio Lopes from the Douro Valley, 14.5% made traditonally with foot treading & stored in used barrels. What do you think EO - more suited to the lamb than the burgers????

It all depends on the quality of your meat. If you think your burger meat is better than the lamb and has nothing overpowering in the bits with it, why not?! Might the brioche buns be a bit sweet or extra bready if you get my drift?

If I want to pair good food with a very good wine, I’d choose lamb every time, though. It’s my personal preference.

Await news as to what you decide.

Arrived in France and off shopping tomorrow. Local duck will be high on the list of meat for the next few days.
