Scrupilously applied by the ref last night...watching Owens reffing Aus v SA now he is a little more balanced...

One thing though, a couple of times Pienaar has actually kicked the ball from the back foot back deeper in to the ruck (presumably to buy time for the next play to be set)...so my question is does the 5 second rule only apply if the ball is presented at the back foot to the SH (or whoever is at the foot of the ruck)?

The law applies if the ball is available to be played (in the opinion of the Referee) by a player in the half back position... this could be any play taking the acting halfback role at that particular breakdown ..

If the Referee sees the ball being kicked back into the ruck, he should award a Free Kick to the opposition !

Are the new rules being applied in the rugby championship though? They're still using crouch, touch, pause and engage...

I thought he was poor on this - he gave the warning, but sometimes players seemed to take ages to do anything, and still weren't penalised... or was that in the Blues game? It's late, I'm getting tired...Confused I hope refs will have the guts to give free kicks (or whatever it is) against dawdlers!

Refs like Owens have been shouting "use it!" and "there it is!" for ages anyway so it's just a case of formalising it and making refs consistent.

So no problems then.

Rats with less charisma mun.

If I were anything in terms of rugby positions, it would be a scrum half.

Scarletman, this '5 second rule', is it 5 seconds from when the ref says 'use it' or is it that when he says use it you have to get the ball away immediately??

I've noticed a few times over the weekend, refs saying use it, only for the SH to still wait an age to get the ball away - by age I mean a good few seconds, possibly more than 5. I've yet to see a ref ping a SH yet for it.

Thing is, 5s after he's said "use it" is still an age - probably longer than refs like Owens would have given them prior to the new rule.

Agree Haydn when the ref shouted use it, they didnt. Why bring in a rule they dont want to really use properly.

In 1972, Roy Bergiers scored that try and said "that was for you lofty"

It is 5 seconds after the Referee calls "Use it" .... Unless Gollum comes out of retirement, then it's 5 seconds before the Ref calls "use it"  ! Wink LOL
