Watching Roland Garros, a comment from Mrs EO about Mats Wilander has prompted this thread.
What she liked about Mats, and I’ll skip a few of the compliments some of which are from a historical perspective, boiled down to “how it was never about him”. It was always about the players involved. He was completely focussed. He might indulge in a bit of his old playing history but it’s never more than when he’s with another courtside former pro. Who on the rugby commentating circuit can you say the same about? Not all of the list will infuse enjoyment, anticipation and positivity into their audience. If you’re after objectivity, then the list narrows. I’ll start with Benjamin Kayser - scores on all fronts superbly, even in a second language Ben Kay is usually pretty good. The classic car company namesake is extremely good, yet torpedoes his high-standing by completely losing any objectivity he might have previously expressed when a team, or country from which the team originates, isn’t winning and/or gets an unfavourable (maybe big) decision against them. In tennis, Mats Wilander and many of the Eurosport team are pretty good at this. Most of the URC commentators and pundits betray their roots far too easily, they’d lose more than their shirts at poke. Over to you |

The newish welsh commentator who did Llandovery's last 2 games and the English Commentary on S4c on Saturday comes across as a right arrogant know it all.

Given the naysayer vibe and Ammanford statue, I wondered if you’d been hacked. Glad I can relax

Bryan Habana is a class pundit, I -unfairly- assumed he'd have a big ego (he raced a bloomin cheetah once to prove how fast he was, you can't really blame me) but whenever hes' been on the commentary he has been humble, funny, insightful and unbiased.
Struggle to think of many good ones in general tbh, in the world of soccerball Ally McCoist is really good - one of the few who doesn't just hold a massive boner for one of the big prem teams and actually talks about the game in front of him.

John Barclay and Sam Warburton have the intellect, vocabulary and credentials (and are neutral enough to not put other countrymen off.)

There's a great clip of him recently where he was in the stadium pre match & some music came on & he said "Oh is this (I can't remember the name of the rock band)? IF it is, it's going to go off. It is (insert band name here)"

Don't you all miss Eddie ? I do. His understated, laconic and clear style will be missed by all (most) of us. And he spoke with knowledge of, and ability to play, the game.

Was impressed by Courtney Lawes on today’s coverage of England v SA.
He was more eloquent than I’d expected. He also stood his ground very firmly from a point of realism and looking to progress when Ugo Monye was busy whingeing. Bluntly, the SA side picked a good few second choices in their starting side this week. They played poorly, relative to their usual standards. Their discipline was poor and kept England and the commentators on the edge of their seats. At least Borthwick changed his subs policy and ignored the clock and pre-planning. Austin Healey whinged when England weren’t getting the ref decisions and even Ben Kay joined in at one point. Austin’s infectious, after all, so even the most objective succumb. The games within the game were very entertaining and meanwhile, the forecast outcome happened maybe without quickening the pulse of the neutral supporter.

![]() My point was (aiming to be) about Lawes being more realistic than seasoned journo Monye whose pro playing days are somewhat distant. Lawes and Hartley in the pundit role add value. They come across as more objective than Healey, although he has his plus points his weaknesses and faults aren’t very far behind..

Most commentators can do no right. People will always have a moan.
