Huw Morris RIP

Like several,on the forum,  I am a bid cricket fan ,abd Glamorgan member .

Most on here have like je aired our views on the ashes debacle.

It's  with great sadness however I  learnt yesterday  of the death of Welsh cricket legend Huw Morris.

My close cricketing fiends and I have sat in debate for hours discussing the best ever Glammy team.

There could be several permutations, depending on your view. One constant however, was the selection of Huw Morris. 

In my team  he would be batting three following Alan Jones and Steve James, bringing real solidity to the role and making the current England incubate look like Ice cream Vendors. Despite scoring record numbers of centuries and 2,200 in a single season, Huw gained only three England caps , which is similar to the treatment many Glammy players have suffered at the hands of England selectors .

It is however his work as an administrator,  firstly as CEO of the EC, and then back at Glamorgan , a similar  role.

Crucially for Glammy, his work saved them fro insolvency, developing Glamorgan on to a sound financial footing and marketing  the Swalec Stadium. In all of this  hexwent about his tasks in the quiet modest way he played his cricket.

I met him several times at Glamorgan members functions and forums. He was always so approachable,  likeable and incredibly knowledgeable.  At 62 it's really a tragedy for his family, but he will be remembered  fondly , for many years to come.

But Hugh morris was an absolute legend. His achievements in Cricket are immense. A superb opening batsmen, as brave as they come. Morris and James were a fantastic opening pair and put on umpteen massive partnerships. 

The 1990s turned out to be a golden era of welsh cricket built on the shoulders of morris ,james maynard but also hemp , cottey, dale...The all round skills of croft and Dale and the consistent wicket taking of watkin , barwick, darren thomas, cosker, metson/shaw etc  and of course king viv richards and later the mighty waqar younis 

Morris finally had his england caps after 11 yrs at Glamorgan...His battling 44 against an awesome windies attack was bravery personified. Who could forget his acrobatics in fending off the frighteningly ferocious patrick patterson? Why he didnt get another chance who knows? In the pantheon of under capped Glamorgan legends hes high up the list with maynard and don shepherd, emrys davies etc

Morris captained us to our 1st trophy in decades , at canterbury on a magical occasion in viv richards last ever match ...epic...He also made a huge century at Taunton to win the championship in 1997 (Yes I was there) and retired at the end of the season..with record centuries....

His career off the field was as extraordinary becoming CEO of the EC(W)B running the english game for several years during a run of 3 ashes victories...He later returned as Glamorgan CEO, delivering several international matches including the ashes...And helped form the welsh fire 100 franchise and fought to ensure it was Cardiff based...He oversaw a reversal of financial fortunes from £17 million debts to now be in credit. 

Raised hundreds of thousands for Cancer charities and is survived by his wife and 2 daughters
