I thought the new rule was that the ref could ask the Video ref to look at the previous phases before a scoring event

during the quins v sarries match, the linesman asked the ref to look at an incident nowhere near the try line

is this the case?

In the Aviva yes, they can go back 10 phases I think. On trial there and prety much everywhere else I think.

Rabo way behind, same for the rule about concussed players being given the same treatment as a blood bin.

Watched the Saints v Wasps game on Froday night adn the Wasps prop was binned for dropping a knee on the head of someone in the ruck...linesman spotted it...told the ref at the next stop of play...video ref called in...recommended a yellow...off he went.

I thought it was only on trial in the Aviva and in the Currie Cup?

Ok then........Scarlets v Dragons when Scott fumbled the ball near the Scarlets line and the Drags slide in to score. TMO called for adjudication.
Meanwhile, Nigel Owens has a conversation with his linesman in Welsh whilst waiting for the TMO's decision (heard via Ref Link):

Nigel: "Red carried ball back so if it's no try then it's a Dragons scrum 5"
Linesman: "yes, I agree"
Both watch the big screen

Nigel: "oh, it wasn't carried over. Ah, red knocked on".

All this took place NOT in the in-goal area, therefore had the TMO not awarded his try then Nigel would have based his decision on video replay. Is this allowed? What if an act of foul play was pointed out to the ref on the big screen? Would he act on it?

A difficult question but should Nigel have turned his back on the big screen and was he wrong to look at it to clarify his position should the TMO declare no try?

Referees can NOT base any of their decisions on the viewing of the "Big Screen" !

He would have had to abide by the TMO's decision & recommendation  !

think the new rules will ruin rugby...

IMO going back up to ten phases is ridiculous...

2nd London Welsh try today, was a great try and it was called back for no reason by the ref, try was awarded but it just stops rugby now.... slowly becoming NFL guys where the game is stopped and held up at every opportunity....
