I've tried looking at the laws but didn't get the answer to this.
1) How long has the place kicker got to kick the kick over the posts? 2) Does it differ between a penalty and a conversion? 3) When does the allocated time start being times by the referee? Thanks |

1) & 2) a) 1 MINUTE FOR PENALTIES, b) 1 MINUTE 30 SECONDS FOR CONVERSIONS (MUST BE WITH THE SAME BALL) 3) a) FROM THE THE TIME THAT A KICK AT GOAL IS INDICATED (PENALTIES) b) FROM THE TIME THE TRY IS AWARDED (CONVERSIONS) The law was changed last season on conversions to try to stop the try scorer throwing the ball into the crowd. If a defender kicks or throws the ball away, then the 1m 30s starts from when the ball returns to the playing area. |

Hypothetical question. Say a try is scored and either the scorer or defender belts the ball out of the ground. Would you have to wait until that ball was returned? Or does common sense prevail and a new ball used?

Thanks Scarletman. I reckon a large number of penalties aren't kicked within a minute of being indicated.

You could well be right, but a lot of penalties are accompanied by the clovk being stopped for injuries or the Referee talking to the offending side. Also a good captain will develop a good rapport with the referee if only to knock a few more seconds of the clock if they happen to be in the lead. Water carriers try the distraction technique too "want a drink sir ?"

When the one minute rule was brought in, it was one minute from the arrival of the kicking tee. So that rule changed as well.

How ? It always has been from when the kicking tee arrives or when a kick at goal is indicated ! The only change being that Conversions MUST be taken with the same ball that was used to score the try, hence the time extension to 1'30s. |

Why would this distract the ref? He should have his own method of counting the minute shouldn't he? Not rely on a match clock or stadium clock. It's probably splitting hairs and being a bit petty. But if there's a law in the first place it needs to be adhere properly. (apart from the forward pass law obviously) |

It's not always clear when a kick at goal is indicated but for our first kick last night, if you take as the start time the moment when Foxy arrived at the ref and indicated ( not the indications that Foxy was giving as he ran towards the referee) it took 25-30 seconds for the kicking tee to arrive with Rhys and a further 45 seconds for Rhys to kick the ball. So more than the minute in total. Zebre's first penalty was exactly the same with a wait of nearly half the minute for the tee to arrive (their tee carrier ran faster than ours but fumbled the pick-up!) and then more than the remaining 30 seconds for the kicker to get the kick away. Both kicks were on the far side of the ground from the support staff. I would suggest that nearly every kick from every team takes more than the minute in total, particularly if the tee carrier has to rum across the pitch. As a postscript, Rhys doesn't half do alot of realigning the ball- 3 or 4 readjustments for the first kick last night.

I timed the second penalty which Rhys successfully kicked.
Took longer than 1 minute between the ref indicating a kick at goal and Rhys starting his run-up. |
