I agree - whereas Bearman really goes for the 'spear', the 22 seems pretty half-hearted and deserves a much lesser penalty, IMO. |

Any referees care to explain the subtle difference of the 4 clearouts, and different sanctions imposed etc?

All awful. Nice compilation though, man. It's a big grey area that - clearly no arms used, no binding, so they're all illegal? It's just the lack of consistency from the citing officials.
Or is there some rationale I'm not aware of? Like perceived intent? |

all illegal, to join a ruck you have to bind onto your own team player...

You own player? I thought it was any player with the arms above hip height. I have no problem if they are all illegal. It's the banning of two players above for 2 weeks each and letting other 2 off scott free that I can't get my head around. Unless, as PJ states, there is something I'm not aware of. |

Three of the four clips in my opinion are in the category of "CHARGING"
Clip 1 - on the 2nd charge, clearly leads with his head ! Clip 2 - Samoan Shoulder charge on Biggar ! Clip 3 - one eyed view, No Offence .... Ok then Shoulder Charge to the head ! Clip 4 - Tackler not releasing / rolling away 1st, then Green 4 head & shoulders below hips & suspect not binding !!! Just for you Sal ... 16.2 Joining a ruck
(a) All players forming, joining or taking part in a ruck must have their heads and shoulders no lower than their hips. Sanction: Free Kick (b) A player joining a ruck must bind on a team-mate or an opponent, using the whole arm. The bind must either precede, or be simultaneous with, contact with any other part of the body of the player joining the ruck. (c) Placing a hand on another player in the ruck does not constitute binding. (d) All players forming, joining or taking part in a ruck must be on their feet. I was inclined to select Tuilagi for the Lions, but not after seeing that - not because what he did (or attempted) was dirty, but because he, as supposedly an English tank, was unable to do serious damage to half-pint sized 1/2p DESPITE trying his best. What a pussy! |

The Tuilagi one is probably the closest to being legal as there is some attempt to bind with both arms and his body angle is half decent, albeit leading with the head like most of the others.
It's a tricky one to call, if it's reffed to the letter of the law the defensive team will benefit significantly which could slow the game down, on the flip side we don't want people getting cleared out with such little regard for safety. Suppose a clearout should effectively be a tackle between the hips and shoulders.

I thought the tuilagi one was the worst. As he looked up and targeted the head and neck area. The other 3 were clumsy at worse. Ball was lucky only to have a small ban coz he did make contact with the head. But it's a contact sport and a good clear out( contact under shoulder level) is part of the game.

Didn't Liam Williams give away a last minute penalty try and therefore lose a match for Wales against South Africa for this type of thing?

This is worse than Liam's because he opens his shoulder up, pulls his arm into his body and turns his head away.

Saw it in a highlights programme on TV - even the English commentators were amazed that a penalty try was not awarded, in fairness to them. Very poor indeed by the officials - and a pity they weren't on the job in SA for Liam's effort! |
