I've read that if the Aussies beat NZ this morning, then Wales will become no. 1 ranked country.
Well - it's nearly half time... Aussies lead 13-12... and NZ have just had a player red carded for a shoulder to the head! Update - HT score is 16-12 after penalty for red card tackle. Watch this space!

Number one in the world! Shows how statistics are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Australia 47, NZ 26. Well, the point is surely that ratings reflect consistency - and when you go 14 games unbeaten (as Wales have done) you end up top of the ratings. That's not the same as being 'the best in the world' on a one-off basis as in a knock-out tournament. For example, from other sports - in football, Man City won the Premiership last season with a magnificent total of 98 points, but Liverpool were European Champions. True, City were FA Cup winners - but for the first time since 2011, despite being the best team in England in terms of 'consistency' in the league. Despite many thinking that Man. City have been the best team in Europe since Guardiola took over, they have still never won the Champion's league final (or even reached the final, I think). Another good example concerns Real Madrid - a superpower at the European Champions Cup, winning in 2018 despite finishing only 3rd in the league, and also in 2016 when 2nd in the league. Several women tennis players were ranked no. 1 without ever winning a Grand Slam tournament - the most well known being Caroline Wozniacki - at least, until she finally broke her duck by winning the Australian open in 2018, having first reached the no. 1 ranking in 2010! All this is a long way of saying that rankings don't measure the same as KO tournament results. FWIW - I think Wales are in a good place ATM, and I'll be seriously disappointed if we don't make the semis, at least, at the RWC. Realistically, there are around 6 countries who could actually win it. Edited by aber-fan - 10 August 2019 at 1:58pm |

Fantastic that Wales number 1 team what worries me is the Aussies as usual look to be peaking just in time for tournament.

Yes indeed - the Aussies always seem to peak at the right time. The introduction of White, Leoliofano, Beale at 15 has transformed their attacking play. Kerevi at 12 looks a real handful at the moment. In addition their forwards seem to have upped their game. Difficult to assess as NZ were down to 14 but the missed tackle count and lack of forward power was surprising to say the least. Retallick getting fit is becoming pretty crucial. Elsewhere South Africa look back to their best - massive forward power & clear leadership at 9/10. They will be hard to beat in Japan. Most open World Cup for a long time. NZ have a lot to do.

Didn't see it - had to make do with the radio.
Sounded as if Wales only were really on top in the third quarter.
