Not the only one...2 years of not being able to leave the country (or more succinctly having to quarantine for a ridiculous amount of time in a Govt facility when you get back) has ground down a load of my mates too. The final straw was the schools closing again, many have just bailed without a plan as such. |

Really? Mask wearing is one of the most effective and least intrusive measures which can help to reduce transmission of Covid - but you'd happily end it? Maybe first consider the evidence: At least ten studies have confirmed the benefit of universal masking in community level analyses: in a unified hospital system,47 a German city,48 two U.S. states,49, 50 a panel of 15 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.,51, 52 as well as both Canada53 and the U.S.54-56 nationally. Each analysis demonstrated that, following directives from organizational and political leadership for universal masking, new infections fell significantly. Two of these studies51, 52 and an additional analysis of data from 200 countries that included the U.S.56 also demonstrated reductions in mortality. Another 10-site study showed reductions in hospitalization growth rates following mask mandate implementation.54 A separate series of cross-sectional surveys in the U.S. suggested that a 10% increase in self-reported mask wearing tripled the likelihood of stopping community transmission.57 An economic analysis using U.S. data found that, given these effects, increasing universal masking by 15% could prevent the need for lockdowns and reduce associated losses of up to $1 trillion or about 5% of gross domestic product.52 Or this: Fourteen of the 15 states with no mask wearing policy for the general public through September reported a high COVID-19 rate. Of the 8 states with at least 75% mask adherence, none reported a high COVID-19 rate. States with the lowest levels of mask adherence were most likely to have high COVID-19 rates in the subsequent month, independent of mask policy or demographic factors. Mean COVID-19 rates for states with at least 75% mask adherence in the preceding month was 109.26 per 100,000 compared to 249.99 per 100,000 for those with less adherence. Our analysis suggests high adherence to mask wearing could be a key factor in reducing the spread of COVID-19. This association between high mask adherence and reduced COVID-19 rates should influence policy makers and public health officials to focus on ways to improve mask adherence across the population in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. As someone who really can't afford to take chances with COVID (nice for you that you can), I appreciate it when others show consideration to those of us in a less-safe state by wearing masks. I certainly won't be venturing into any enclosed space with strangers without wearing my mask any time soon. And even then...

Yes, this has been my position on this thread since at least October 23rd People and private businesses can choose how they want to deal with it now. I do understand it’s more difficult for people with pre-existing medical conditions, or those going in and out of hospitals for treatment But we’re not at a point where the whole population need to be subjected to any rules because hospital capacity isn’t going to be overwhelmed - not in any plausible scenario.

I sympathise with you, it is difficult and frustrating. I can only relate that I have a severe nut allergy and when someone eats peanuts near me I struggle for breath. Generally when I see they have bought some or a snickers or something I ask them not to eat it around me or I just move on from wherever I am. I don’t want snickers or peanuts to be banned for the sake of me, I just have to adept my life to limit contact with them.

Some experts believe the vaccine protection is wearing off. Next boosters don't start until April sometime.

Yeah it’s interesting - someone did a little deep dive on it here. Hard to tell why, somewhat concerning. 2 years to the week since Lockdown 1. Might as well lock down again just for a laugh

Going to ask this in here as it is COVID related.
Does anyone know how people will get the £150 credit on their Council Tax Bill? I have been sent my demand for the year, my house is band B, & there is no mention of it on the demand.

As anyone will know, I am not Boris's greatest fan. I also continue to shield - more or less. The stats are complicated, though - yesterday, I saw a very detailed list of figures (probably on BBC, I can't find them now) which showed that the numbers of patients in hospital in Wales BECAUSE of COVID was quite small (76 or so?) There were more people in hospital for other treatments who also tested positive for COVID ( say, 250+ or so). Only around 9 patients were on ventilators. My guess... with most people vaccinated, even those who catch COVID don't get very ill for the most part. (I am immunocompromised, so continue to be super careful for the time being.) So, I think the worst is over (despite the government) and FOR MOST PEOPLE they can be a bit less careful - but PLEASE show consideration for those of us not so lucky. (Don't forget your elderly family members, diabetics etc!) Each one of us needs to think carefully about not only their own risk profile, but also that of anyone they are close to.

Well said. It’s also why ending free LF tests is such a bad idea. Currently I, as a young fit person can go about my day to day life as normal, knowing that if I want to see a frail family member I can just do a quick test, and know I’m probably not infectious. Taking away those free tests means I’d have to either curtail my own socialising, not see a family member, or pay to see them. Hardly a fair situation, especially so for those who can’t afford the tests.

New infections up to over 71,000 today. Rising steadily every day.
Never mind people can be trusted to act responsibly. (Not)
