The sanctions on Russia are what they really want and they don't care how many non- Westerners die to achieve them. They've made it quite clear that NATO forces won't be joining the fight but they'll be right behind the Ukrainians, arming and cheering them on so that they can further demonise Russia and apply the longed for sanctions. These sanctions will not help Europe as there will be retaliation which will hurt European firms and worse still further increase our cost of living. Only the US will gain as they will be able to sell Europe their very expensive liquified gas, mostly obtained through fracking.
If the US seriously wanted peace all they need do is arrange for Ukraine to remain neutral and outside NATO like Switzerland, Austria, Finland Ireland and others. If they seriously want to help the people of Ukraine they could gift some economic help instead of loaning money to buy weapons. But they don't want to help they just want maintain their political domination ,and the more Ukrainians that die the better their propaganda war goes. Looks like he'll get his Churchill cosplay chance then as war in Ukraine now seems very likely, sadly. Not that the UK has any real influence any more.

Ooooo big dog Johnson is imposing a "barrage of sanctions" against Russia due to their naughtiness. I guess that means no more tennis matches, peerages and political influence via donations to the Conservative Party?
Wasn't there some report that rated Russia as a high threat to UK democracy, concluding that the Government failed to even consider the possibility of Russian interference, that Johnson and mates basically ignored?

Apparently his sanctions are targeted on just 3 individual Russians (who have already been sanctioned by the USA, and 3 Russian banks - Putin must be quacking in his boots by our hard line sanctions for Putin’s likely invasion of a country.
At least the Germans, who’s initially stated that they were not going to get involved, have taken a much harder line with Putin by refusing to sign off the underwater oil pipeline (which will hit Russia far harder than targeting a few banks and a few individuals. Boris likes to talk the talk, fight for the rights of people around the world - but never really walks the walk.

Some interesting debates on twitter. If you go hard now, where do you go if Putin ramps up the pressure? Alternatively, if you go too soft now, it will allow the Russians time to move their capital. Some of course are saying just that, and this will allow the Tory donors some breathing space. I'm not sure whether the 3 named individuals have donated to the Tory party. Another 'Partygate' perhaps !

It's gold dust for Truss and Johnson; they get to talk tough with war rhetoric whilst in reality doing very little. I initially thought the UK could do little, but London is the home of countless Russian billions, including Putin's, so forcing him to open a new account in Switzerland will really hurt him. The pain of finding ID, getting an appointment when you're free, filling out the correct form... take that Vlad!

I know very little regarding the effectiveness or otherwise of sanctions on individuals - for sure freezing assets will cause some pain but its not as if this has happened overnight. Any sensible individual would have seen this coming & acted accordingly. The Swiss will, and always have, taken anyone's money.
As for reducing access to businesses of banking capital that again seems pretty toothless as I am sure there are many Asian based suppliers waiting to step in. Body bags arriving back in Moscow would certainly affect opinion but I have seen nor heard anything yet which suggests anyone other than the Ukrainians are prepared to go that far. |

If we russia with the hardest sanctions we have straightaway -and that doesn’t work what next? Boots on the ground in the ukraine? That”ll be a disaster. I think a staggered approach is best also a total sporting boycott would annoy putin and the russian people

Its quite alarming really what little deterrent the West possesses against Russia. They have already claimed the Crimea and are about to do the same with Donbas.

There’s nothing wrong with a staggered approach but the first sanctions have to at least have some punch. I’m sorry but three individuals and five minor banks isn’t going to make a iota of difference to the Russians, and it then allows everyone else to sell their assets in London before any further sanctions come in. The only conclusion I can come to from the current situation is that the Tories are so compromised by Russian money that they are unwilling to bring in any real sanctions. As for the suggestion that we can’t really do anything most Russians launder their money through the city of London and so if we really wanted to do something we could really hurt them. However that would likely show up all the other tax avoidance / money laundering going on in London, something the Tories (and probably Labour tbh) would never contemplate.

it’s already been said on here that the British government are a little too worried to impose too many sanctions on Russia as there are more Russian million/billionaires living in London than in any other western country, so there is probably a lot more to lose.
Truss as the foreign minister is a joke - the only thing I remember her for (when she was trade secretary) was her spending a lot of tax payers money on a trade mission to Australia, only to appear pleased as punch when announcing that she’d negotiated a deal on pork exports (with a huge carbon footprint).
