At no point did he say that he would be staying in Perth 12 months a year. You seem to have made that leap yourself. He cited family reasons for leaving, and he will undeniably be able to see far, far more of his family by playing for a Japanese club than if he had decided to renew his contract here. All international players have to cope with lengthy periods away from their families, but I think it’s pretty poor to insinuate that Ball was lying when he expressed that 11 months away is too much for him.

You can think what you like that’s your perogative. I can think what i like that is mine. I’m sure part of the appeal is he gets to see more of his family. I’m also sure part of the appeal is a big pay cheque for less rugby in a less physical league . I think it’s a bit niave to think otherwise but everyone is entitled to his or her view on the matter and i respect that

Stuff like he is on a similar time line for  phone calls is a serious reach in fairness.  I’d wager jake has had more money to go a less physical league with a shorter season , i for one don’t blame him at all, plus the added benefit of more time off in the off season to spend with his family, good luck to him i say
You contradict yourself a bit there, surely? It's like a 4 month season in Japan isn't it?

I haven’t really have i? Would you move somewhere that is a 12?hour plus flight from home to be nearer your family? The japanese season is getting shorter by the hour on here first was 5 months now it is four months? If he had gone to play in oz then that would be a diff matter

Don’t they have pre season traning? plus quarantine  times?  You can put it this way it’s like one of us leaving a job in oz to spend more time with a family in west wales but taking a job in south africa. Anyhow this is going round in circles , have a good weekend everyone

It's just like that yeah.
If the job in in SA from (let's say mid Jan inc pre season) to end May instead of July to end of May.

10 months vs 5. Which one would leave me more time to spend with family? I just can't work it out?🤔

You have a good weekend too. Wink

I don’t have a problem with Jake leaving, he can play wherever he likes he’s not the youngest anymore and Japan now makes sense rugby and wallet-wise. But it does contradict the whole going home to be with the family take. But each to their own, only he knows whats best for him, left a massive whole in the team thats for sure.

I think so, welsh international. With more availability this upcoming season also. We are going to struggle in the second row position.

I have to admit that I find this conjecture about Jake pretty bizarre. Assumptions, unsubstantiated as far as I am aware, that he left the Scarlets with a contract in Japan already sown up and leaving the Scarlets under false pretences.

Jake is a professional rugby player and nobody can doubt his commitment to the Scarlets. The Scarlets management were happy to allow him to leave due to the extraordinary circumstances he faced due to Covid restrictions & his young family. Good on them I say because family trumps rugby every day of the week.

in fairness with pre season and qurantine your looking more like 7 months, granted less than 10 but still a large chunk of the year isn’t it?  If you solely  wanted to be closer to the family wouldn’t you just get a job in oz?   No one has cast any doubts over his commitment during his time year or done anything other than wish him well though. i’d go japan looks a great place to try for a year or so, big money easy rugby and more time off etc

I agree with you GPR, especially the comment about his family. He paid us back time again with his performances and left nothing on the field. He deserves all our thanks and now support.
Be careful when you pick up the stick.........IT MAY BE THE WRONG END!!!!!!!!!!

I also agree with GPR.

Given the timing of the announcement about the Japan job, and when Jake would have been having discussions with Scarlets management about returning home, it seems rather more likely that staying in Oz with the family was his original intent.

My best guess is that after returning home, someone from Japan reached out to Jake.  He discussed the offer with his family and I guess they made the decision that the money was too good to pass up, given that he would be away for about half the time and could keep in touch at reasonable times because of being in pretty much the same time zone.

There just doesn't seem to be any need to see anything suspicious or inconsistent in his decisions, to me.

One thing  that should be remembered is that Ball is not the only test lock to leave Wales:Hill chose to leave, too.Neither of them could compete with AWJ when it came to belting out the anthem or talking to the press. The W.R.U have failed to persuade 2 international locks to stay in Wales.....never mind ,we still have the legend AWJ.

Good to see that Ed Kennedy has signed a contract to play for the Brumbies, the team he supported as a child. Well done Ed & good luck.
