Based on what I have seen this season to date I have tried to select a Lions 23. What it shows is how things can change in a few months & may also point to some, lets call them, strange decisions by Gats.
15. Keenan 14. Conway 13. Ringrose 12. Tuilagi 11. Lowe 10. Sexton (C) 9. Gibson-Park 1. Porter 2. Kelleher 3. Furlong 4. Ryan 5. Itoje 6. Doris 7. Curry 8. Conan 16. George 17. Marler 18. Sinckler 19. Beirne 20. Lawes 21. Price 22. Russell 23. Slade There are some tough calls clearly with players like Freddie Steward, Marcus Smith, Josh van der Flier, DTH van der Merwe unlucky not to make it. I have never been a great fan of James Lowe who has been useful going forward but not so great going backwards but he must be one of the most improved players in the past 12 months. According to his coach he had a reality check last season during the 6 nations & proceeded to take the advice given, got himself a lot fitter & worked on his flaws and has now produced two outstanding displays culminating in a try saving rush tackle late yesterday - sheer class in all fairness. Not one Welsh player makes the squad because frankly none of them are good enough based on what I have seen this season. Finally I have commented a lot about the Welsh Lions not getting back to playing enough before International camps etc etc. Pivac himself complains that fitness levels for some players like Wyn Jones are not good enough for top competition yet you look at the Irish players - most of whom will have played a similar number of games this season to the Welsh boys & they have now put together two fully committed superbly executed games where they blew away Japan with their offloading attacking game & had a similar outcome against the best team in the World - so something doesn't quite stack up.

Ireland have done well brilliantly in fact but they have all their players available for the whole autumn, they have few injuries at moment and they had sensible Autumn fixture list.
Contrast that to Wales players not being released playing All Blacks first up with no English based players, injuries by bucket load. Wales team be very different for six nations Liam LRZ North Johnny Williams Adams Biggar, Tomos, Faletau, Tuperic, Jenkins, Beard, AWJ, Francis, Ken and Wyn. That hell of side who will have had time together before six nations don’t write us off yet. |

Rubbish individual performances. Elias is having some game other than that its pretty bleak.

The boy's got gas to spare. Sparing Welsh blushes today to be fair.

He's had a good game. Welsh forwards have struggled with Fiji at the breakdown. Just a bit slow and lacking cohesion.

Thought Ryan Elias was more of a likely choice for PoM.

Dire from Wales - Elias, EJ and back three had decent games but the rest were pretty awful today. The starting props (inc Dillon Lewis) and the half-backs were particularly atrocious. Selection of an under powered back-row and poor decision making didn't help either. I wouldn't really want to see Carre, Tomkins, DLewis, Seb Davies anywhere near a Welsh shirt anytime soon. I'd also like to see a new forwards coach...

Elias has put a very strong marker down to be a Wales No 1.
Thus far one of quite a limited number of positives in the AI campaign…Ellis Jenkins return ( and captaincy credentials) Basham bursting on the scene, McNichol’s solid showing, Sanjay and Cuthy today, Rowlands looks worth his place, as do Tomos and Wainwright. I think we might have seen the Carre experiment parked after today, Jonny Williams doesn’t to tick Pivac’s boxes, bit unsure why, Wyn and Francis are licking their wounds after the SA scrum challenges, Beard is more 2020 than 2021 vintage ( I thought he would lead the line tbh). I’m also not sure what the best centre partnership is right now. Nothing seems settled there. Guys coming on are generally not adding value. |
