I honestly believe if the Ospreys played out of their own ground we’d be down to 2 regions already, then the scrapping of the 60 cap rule to follow.
The argument would be that that hasn’t worked too well for the Scots. As it stands, the Ospreys and the Scarlets have produced more internationals than any other region in recent years. It would have to be the Dragons being the least successful side as there has to be a region in the capital city.

No. Seeing as the WRU are shareholders in the URC!

All four Regions range from below average to poor. We drift in and out of both categories.

Yep. However, only us and Cardiff have won anything or looked remotely capable in Europe in the last 5 years.

Looking back since the regions were formed trophy wise Cardiff and the Ospreys are the most successful.

After the last few weeks ir’s fairly obvious who the weakest two regions are. There is not a single cardiff born and raised player in the current welsh xv , if any welsh sides are going to be merged it’s the two east sides who should be in the firing line

Nonsense. Ospreys yes, but Cardiff only won trophies because they were in the Bic Pen Comp. They have never won a league title.

Totally agree with Scarletnut when he says this won’t be a rugby decision. Just like the building of a hotel wasn’t a rugby decision. It’ll come down to what the WRU feel is best for business.

I also agree with that to an extent, but don’t you think the WRU have too much vested interest in the Dragons to pull the plug on them? I’m not sure, but if that’s the case, then they would never pull the plug on the team that’s based in the capital. And that only leaves two others. Rugby-wise, absolutely it’s the Dragons who should go. Or of course…we keep 4 regions and work on funding them sufficiently!

What I will say, is having 4 regional teams so close to each other geographically isn’t a great strategy for promotion of the game across the nation of Wales. Llanelli and Swansea are a stones throw away from each other. Likewise for Cardiff and Newport. I’m not advocating the overhaul of the current structure, just making an observation.

You have hit the nail on the head there RR - " common sense". Since when have we had anyone with a modicum of sense running the WRU???? Gareth Davies was the best of bad bunch & even he could not hack his way through the bloated self interest of the blazers. Nigel Walker will do his best no doubt but he has Butcher and the bean counter blocking his way. Scarlets & the Ospreys are the pick of a bad bunch clearly & have been for many years. The Dragons are not improving under Ryan despite a fairly impressive recruitment programme. Dai Young's Cardiff have fallen off a cliff in recent weeks. This is more than money though - the English Premiership teams are having to make do with similar funding to the Welsh regions but they are producing, across the board, competitive teams playing attractive winning rugby. At this moment in time Cardiff & Dragons would struggle to beat any of the 13 teams in England; more to the point us and the Ospreys would probably lose to at least 10 of them with only Bath, Newcastle & Worcester in our sights. Welsh professional rugby needs a complete overhaul of our coaching structures from academy through to the National team. If you invest in top quality coaches then players will improve as will overall performance. Coaches like Steve Tandy & Robin McBride need to be involved in Welsh rugby for starters. Look at the impact Steve Borthwick has had at Leicester.
