The backrow suffered without Falatae being at 8, Navidi isn’t an international 8 and it affected the balance of the backrow.  Reffell was outstanding again, why Pivac didn’t selected him for the 6 nations and run the risk of England capping him beggars belief.
Wainwright again coped really well against probably the most physical front row in international rugby.
George North finally looked comfortable at centre, which must be his position moving forward.
On the whole I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how competitive the series has been - considering the performances of the regions against those of the SA franchises.  I thought that Victor Matfield’s were very true when he said that the welsh players should be performing at similar levels for their regions.

At least Wales regained some respect but I can't help wondering what our DNA is to win games. Selection, for me, is still baffling at times - no chance for Johnny Williams or Cawdor while Tompkins struggled with the physicality of the Boks runners & Tomos, as you correctly point out, is tactically naiive. Also when Faletau drops out why not pick Ratti who is a big man who carries hard and is a decent lineout operator. Wainwright did ok but gave away 3/4 penalties which is no surprise given the challenge he faced. Again Dewi Lake's lineout throwing contributed to our downfall along with poor discipline.

We don't  have powerful, dynamic and skillful ball carriers.
England, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia do.
We are fit, brave, together and reasonably well coached but that will only get you so far.  We have got a very small population and very small player pool to call on.  Injuries have a far greater effect on us than the bigger counties.
We are where we are and enjoy the rare occasional wins over the "Big Boys"
when those come along.
Can things get better?  Yes, but it's  in the hands of the WRU and the administrators. Don't hold your breath!

You make fair points but we don't seem to select the few we do have. For example when Lydiate left the field AWJ comes on and Rowlands moves to 6 probably because they didn't want to expose Basham against guys far bigger. Ratti is the specialist 2nd choice No 8 but we pick Navidi to play 8 when he is clearly too small.

I think Wales main problem is there is always pressure to win these games so we almost always just throw out the best team the manager wants to play. So we hardly ever get to see new talent. Whereas you look at other nations who are confident in giving new guys minutes. In the end it comes back to bite us.

Wouldn’t the issue have been that Basham was the 25th man and Ratti was in the stands without his kit and with so little time available post warm up, it was the only choice? May be completely wrong.

This is literally exactly what Pivac has been doing since becoming Wales coach. He’s handed out new caps like confetti Confused
I still wake up late at night and think of what might have been when tim stimpson hit that jammy penalty1

But there's a halfway house. Yes the confetti comment is valid because there was no structure to what he was doing but you need a squad of 30 or so which is fully interchangeable. Because of injuries if nothing else. The squad that went to South Africa should be the world cup squad except where injuries or a rapidly improving youngster intrude. Within that squad it should be possible to for instance bring in Johnny instead of Tompkins when playing against a team who try to run over the top of our midfield.

Not sure if dillon lewis was fully fit but he was hopeless sat so was the sub prop wainwright penalty machines. Biggar and liam both out jumped in air which is unsual. Lake throwing is regressing every game he plays for wales.  Refell thomas and elias all did well i thought north looked sharp tompkins makes too many bad decisions to be a test 12. A year out from world cup and we look like a q final team at best. I’d like to
See thomas elias francis beard rowlands reffell toby f naividi hardt biggar jonny w george n and a back 3 of lrz adams and liam get a run out. Get ratti on bench to

Rowlands was excellent as well especially given he was forced to play out of position. Made two crucial turnovers and was one of the very few Welsh forwards who got go forward

I agree Rowlands has been outstanding but I’m sorry Beard is a waste of time it’s time to give Chris Tz a go instead. Beard supporters state how great he is in defensive mauls but surely you have to offer much more at international level. He is so inept around the park it’s embarrassing.
She asks why i still can't answer. I guess its in the blood.

Wainwright’s lack of senior experience showed with the penalties he gave away. His scrummaging was better than ok given who he was playing against . His all round game will develop with experience .

Not seen the match beyond 25th minute.

When you think how close we came to winning the series, it’s quite a surprise.

In the first match, the LRZ yellow card, which was a nailed on penalty to us, if correctly blown would have seen us win.

Like many international sides in the build up to the World Cuo, the IRB will try out officials that they believe have potential. The Georgian ref is a godsend to a worldwide federation. If he becomes any good at the level he’s being exposed to now, he will be given plenty more opportunities to do more of the big game

He’s got stacks of confidence. Can he be accurate enough is his challenge? On here, we can find fault with the world’s best.

At the moment, the jury must be out. Give him some top advice and encouragement and if he listens and works with the good advice given, he can improve hugely.

For example, take the Mapmipi non-try i the first SA attack. He was looking at the hands of the SA winger. The ref can do that. His job as assistant official is to look for things as back up to what the ref will be looking at. Instead of looking at the hands of the winger, he ought to have been looking between the feet and the hands. Look there and you can see both the feet - and both were in touch - as well as the waist/arms and above.

Has anyone told him? We won’t know. We can only hope.

I think Lewis, Beard and Lake showed the lack of depth we have in those positions. Lewis is a mobile prop but nothing else. Gatland once said you cant coach a player to be 6ft7, but you can coach him on how to be an international rugby player. Tjis is something Beard is not. Lake is a good loose player but not at his primary job. Throwing in. Its time to say goodbye to the 30+year old fringe players abd begin to see youngsters given their places. Carter and Tszinua for instance

Beard has gone off the boil recently, it might be because you don't see him smashing into rucks in the way Ball did or Rowlands does. He was playing really well earlier in the season so not quite sure what's happened.

If Dewi Lake can sort his throwing out he’ll be a mainstay of the Wales team for a decade IMO. He offers raw power that no other player can match. Let’s hope that he can sort out his lineout skills however as it’s costing us heavily at the moment.

Granted he’s a Lion, but I’ve not seen him to be that high a standard if I’m honest.
