Perceived nepotism is a millions miles away from actual nepotism & removing the responsibility of proving it just allows a total free for all as witnessed many times on this forum. The accusation has been used, not very sparingly, on this forum many times recently. Dwayne Peel & Cubby being just two. Would it have been nepotism behind Cardiff appointing Dwayne? Does any contributor to this forum actually have first hand knowledge of the processes which led up to either appointment? Clearly making accusations without any material proof is a very popular pastime for many - just look at the effect Mr Trump has had & is still having in America. Popular it may be but that don't make it right. For sure I would have applauded the appointment of Gatland & Edwards to take over from our previous coaches but some things just ain't doable.

Not accusing questioning ....Clearly not enough playing or coaching or admin talent is getting discovered and developed all the way through from the cradle to the test team...But if you choose to bury your head in the sand and simply blame the fans asking the questions then welsh rugby disappears. welsh rugby needs to question itself at every level, its simply not good enough

Not sure on nepotism, playing for the right clubs and schools always helped you get a leg up. Same applied in the senior game moving to the bigger clubs always helped you get a cap. As for peel the blues were picking him to be a backs coach a role he had experience in we picked him as head coach a role he has no experience in. Cubby has no experience in his role either look they may both turn out to be master stokes but they are both punts in those jobs best of luck to both. Anyhow back to wales. pivac picked under cooked under prepared players and we got tonked. Doubt we win regardless his selection took any slim chance we had away though. Wales have wasted 4 years under pivac although ww won a test in sa and a 6 nations in that time frame so he hasn’t been a total disaster i guess!

Ok you are questioning whether nepotism is prevalent. My response is prove it. My disagreement with your comment on nepotism is now seized upon by you as burying my head in the sand - thats pretty rich; I suggest you look back over the past few months and read my many posts on the state of Welsh rugby. You will find that many of your points I totally agree with so no I am not burying my head in the sand. Perhaps we just have differing priorities on how to improve the situation.

There'll almost certainly always be a degree of nepotism but as mentioned by others I wouldn't put that as one of the main issues.
The problems for me are around the season structures from u15 onwards, a tendency to look at power and size over attitude and game understanding and looking at a narrow pool of players based largely on educational choices. We bemoan the season structure in pro rugby with players jumping between the club and international game too frequently and how slow they are to adjust (despite it being their full time job) yet expect kids to jump from different coaches, teammates and structures at school/college, schoolboy/academy and club without any detriment to their development, when you sit back and look at it it's bonkers. The seasons should build up towards the higher level games at schoolboy/academy level, it's better for player development and also gives coaches at that higher level an opportunity to see more players rather than make early calls on who's good enough. Player attributes wise it's easier to develop power and strength later on than it is to develop game understanding and leadership, they need to be playing and learning and the strength and conditioning stuff can come later, we also need to identify better players that may never be internationals but can easily move between semi pro and pro and keep them engaged for longer. Lastly we need to cast the net wider than largely that initial group identified at 16's academy level and those playing just for coleg sir gar and llandovery, there's plenty of players in other colleges and youth rugby/early senior rugby who'll develop later. It doesn't mean that the Scarlets need players watching every game, but they need a network of people they can trust and to engage with coaches for their views on players (there's loads of former pro's coaching throughout the region who's opinions should be valued), we haven't got much resources so need to be smart. It's really frustrating because there's plenty of talent out there that we're not making the most of. |

Tidy analysis Of Wales' shortcomings by Jiffy in today's W. Mail (believe it or not) Nothing really new but brings it all together and could equally well have described the current Scarlets demise.

Covid wrecked age group rugby for 2 years, i think the regions just basically kept the age grpup fron younger sides and promoted them en masse. Schools and age group club rugby really is in real trouble at mo with player numbers down and lack of games being played,

More than anything covid was a wasted opportunity for a fresh start, in particular below the pro level as we wouldn't need any cross-border discussions or agreements. Too late now though but the ideas and discussions behind closed doors need to start becoming more than ideas.
