What does this mean for Llanelli RFC and Scarlets? https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/rugby/rugby-news/wru-plan-new-elite-eight-26490634
RFC currently #12 and bottom of a league that could go to x8, but with Scarlets able to nominate x1 club from the region, with one more possible. In other words, you can have x2 clubs per region, but not x3. With the regional game in peril and talk of reducing regions, I think the Premiership needs to remain as the fallback with the widest possible fan appeal. I assume retaining Llanelli RFC, as it is, is essential in a world where there is uncertainty over the continuation of Scarlets. Therefore, you'd need significant guarantees over the latter in order to contemplate Llanelli RFC falling out of the Premiership. Because both happening (Llanelli RFC out of the top and Scarlets' disappearance) is unthinkable. But try telling that to Quins or Llandovery. Three into two doesn't go. The questions are getting sharper, no? |

the quins and llandovery would make sense as they have grounds so the scarlets wouldn't be paying for them to play and given the record of the rfc over the last 3 seasons they deserve to go.

Back of a fag packet plan. How does this section fit into the overall plan for Welsh rugby to become as good as it can get? Why just this segment? If there is an overall plan where is it, what does it look like where is the financial plan to support the whole game? I despair

If this plan comes to fruition we should nominate the RFC. We shouldn’t give control of our academy player development to a separate semi pro club whose top priority would be to win games rather than prepare youngsters for pro rugby. The best facilities are down here also.
I’d be happy for the club to be renamed when it went into this new league if that would make things easier politically. It doesn’t sit well that a team called “Llanelli RFC” is playing at that low level anyway. I think it was a mistake to give it that branding when it was created in 2003.

Would seven home games be enough income for the clubs selected
Premiership should be developed properly by WRU instead of being abused

This 8 team Premiership proposal will only support the development of Welsh rugby if the 8 teams come under the umbrella of the regions, 2 teams for each region. This would spread the regional message further away from, Llanelli, Swansea, Cardiff and Newport and encourage greater support for the regional teams.
I could envisage the Scarlets having Carmarthen Quins and Llandovery as feeder teams, sharing coaching and players. Whilst this may be a blow for Llanelli RFC supporters, they still have the Scarlets playing in Llanelli to support, so hopefully the right solution will be chosen for elite rugby in Wales.

Not a dig but why should a self sufficient successful club like Llandovery cede anything to the Scarlets? If we had been half as well run as the Drovers over the years we wouldn't have sold Stradey twice and picked up the nickname of cash strapped Scarlets.

The two businesses aren’t really comparable. Llandovery have more in common with Division 3 village clubs than a top level professional club.

Drovers looks very well drilled this season, I’ve enjoyed watching them albeit from the other side of the ocean! They beat table topping Cardiff hands down. Could have been top if they beat Aberafon last week?

Playing devils advocate, Scarlets could provide academy prospects, players not selected that week, as well as training facilities for clubs involved. Absolutely can be a two way street.
