If the Premiership needs to reduce to 8 teams from 12 then shouldn't we just drop Llanelli, Swansea, Cardiff & Newport? These clubs already exist in 'regional' form and don't have the fanbase to support 2 teams each.

It remains to be seen how the funding goes, following today’s news.

Where does everyone think Llanelli RFC are going to get 25-30 players from to play against English “A” sides ?

Am hearing many of the RFC players are joining other clubs, as expected.

That prob leaves a dozen academy players aged 18 plus left to select from.

Llandovery and Quins have full fixture lists with an increased Prem.

For me this is down to cost, it’s costing Scarlets far too much money to maintain a poor side when you add in all the costs, and the Scarlets desperate need the money to try and maintain a decent squad.

I guess the better academy and young pros will be sent to develope in Llandovery and The Quins.

Having these players playing fairly pointless games in the Premiership is far from ideal. If the management have been clever they can now arrange fixtures against the academy teams from England and, perhaps, even Ireland. Regular games against the Tigers or Leinster academy will do a lot more for development than playing Ebbw or Bridgend.
the academy players will be playing academy rugby the rfc will be playing who exactly? Where do our fringe players who are not in first team but too old for academy rugby go now?
Which fringe players? With a squad of 38, and undoubted injuries, how many players outside the 23 do you think we will have in need of game time? Surely not more than Carmarthen and Llandovery can use
We're still still here, but I wish we were in an Anglo-Welsh

the 15 that are not part of the match day squad? Then again as you say 9 or 10 will prob be injured, i don’t see llandovery wanting any players from us tbh they seem to be doing well enough as they are, any drovers fans on here who have a view on this? Personally i doubt the rfc will play 6 games next season and i reckon theyll be wound up in a year or two and scarlets will be rebranded as llaneli rugby

Llandovery and Quins press statements are very supportive of the Scarlets and seem happy to accommodate our academy guys.

Not sure they'll be happy with just seven home games a season when they've been enjoying eleven ( and twelve next season ) so maybe the elite status won't be attractive to them.

I didn't think the plan was for an 8 team prem.

I thought the thinking was to leave the WRU league structure intact, and create an independent 8 team competition, perhaps organised by the PRB, which wouldn't be connected to the pyramid of WRU leagues.

So it would be an 8 team closed shop, with no relegation to the WRU system. And no promotion into it.

Yes you are right according to the strong rumours. the prem will remain within the remit of the WRU community board.

This new semi pro elite league will be an 8 team league with a possible ring fenced period which sits above the Prem league.

In fairness to Llandovery and Quins they have developed many many players for us over the last decade or so, with some going on to international honours after progressing further with us.

The new elite 8 would have to come under the PRG not the community game and be a form of A league - anything else will be a disaster
