Dan the Drover has seen a lot of Ajuwa. He says defences are now being shaped to try and address his ball carrying and power...always a bad thing for the defending team, as adapting to one players skills knocks the team shape in most cases. Defensively he needs coaching on alignment etc.
Love to see the following 20 yr old or younger get a crack in the AWC
Dale Ford, Ben Morgan,Gareth Davies, Scott Williams,Nick Reynolds,Nick Cudd,Simon Gardiner.
I'd love to see a team of youngsters against Worcester in a couple of weeks. Nothing to lose.

I think the WRU should look along the lines of the RFU/ Premiership route, they run an A league with fixtures played on a Monday night to allow squad players and Academy players to play at a level above club rugby.
The Superleague have a similar system where their development teams play on the same day as the first team but at a different venue in the region - a good way to spread the word.
If we were to follow a similar route to either of these it would give an opportunity for the "youngsters" to have competitve games at a level above the Premiership.

Its a good point.
The AWC and B&I Cup are too closely aligned in my view..both give us much needed cross border action with the GP teams, but I'm not sure if we will ever put the 'right' team out. Take next week for example. RFC are playing league leaders Pontypridd on Saturday and the Scarlets play Quins in the AWC on the Sunday. What do we do...take the up and coming talent out of the RFC team and suffer a probable tuning (we are already taking in players on permit to put a team out) ,or keep the RFC team strong and put players (some of which need a break, badly) out for the Quins match. We will proabably try to do both, and do justice to neither.
Also imagine we don't get in to the Top 6 in the Prem this season--we don't qualify for the B&I necxt year anyway...a real threat that exists for both us and the Dragons region.
All needs a re-think...

Did anyone see Rhys Jones play for the Drovers against Ebbw Vale on Saturday? Apparently he came on for Craig Cross (remember him - played against the Ospreys last year) in the second half. Owain Evans came on for Peter Edwards. Neither can have made a big difference as according to Huw S. Thomas in the Western Mail the set pieces remained under pressure. Still that's a very young front row and they still managed to win, so nothing lost by experimenting. I wish there was a little more logic in the Scarlets/ Llanelli front row development. What for instance has happened to Mathew Evans who played in the first friendly against Bath?

Ben Morgan mowed down the poor sap who attempted to tackle him on the way to scoring his try. His work around the field was OK, RFC didn't move very well and the ball from the scrum was pretty poor - hitting the floor before getting to the man - there was generally a lack of momentum.
When he ran, it took a couple of men to bring him down. A good prospect and a real opportunity to bring through our own number 8. We haven't done this since Scott have we? Popham, Powell and Lyons have been our last 3 I do believe. Cudd looked good too. And there is Turnbull.
I think the Academy/Premiership set-up is finally paying out as there are now a lot, probably a surplus, of talented youngsters coming through.

We need to have a mixture of a team playing in the Stoop next Sunday.
We need the likes of Vernon and Easterby in the squad at least i think.
I am all for the fringe players playing but dont agree with putting them all in without a bit of experience to go with it.

My biggest concern with the Academy (with all sports not just the Scarlets) system is where do all these players go? How can we ensure that the players coming through the system have sufficient game time in the future? If you look at the open side with the Scarlets we have Daf Jones really making the jersey his own. Behind him we have Richie Pugh (25), Jon Edwards (22), Nic Cudd (20) but coming behind them again we have Owain Powell with the Under 18 and Jac Thomas with the Under 16. Very shortly we will have 5 excellant players all chasing one jersey. What happens to the players who miss out? how do we kep these players involved in the sport?

Actually there was a a bit of a change last year...I think five or six 19/20 yr olds were 'released'. We now have four or maybe five 19/20 year olds left in the academy. I don't see that as too many. and arguably not enough...it will be another 2 years before the U18's challenge for regional places by and large. |

Ideally we need 2 first choice players competing for every spot, and a youngster/old head as a reserve option. At the moment we can't afford that, but there are a lot of games in a season now, and a lot of injuries.

Richie pugh is 26 and Jon Edwards is 25, they are two players who are very similar in the way they play. Cudd is a very good player and is certainly one for the future, but he's had his problems with injuries, so i think he needs to regain fitness and confidence in his shoulder because as a number 7 you cant have any doubts about being knocked about and having re occurring injuries. Out of the 5 flankers you've named id be delighted if 1 of them 'make it'. And what i mean by make it is having 30/40 Wales caps and being a powerful force in the Heineken Cup. Sadly i don't see Pugh or Edwards being that, hopefully one of the other three can 'make it'.
