Could the referee tell both sides that uncontested scrums would be the only safe way of playing that match due to the ground giving so much when there was a push by both sides??

It seemed very dangerous to me as a lot of the scrums went to ground - through no fault of the packs it looked like.

I thought on a few occasions Adam Jones slipped and was penalised, but there's not a lot you can do as a prop if your feet give way!!

The pitch was a disgrace.

Scarletman??

The Referee is responsible for the safety of all the players, so yes he could deem that the playing surface is not safe enough for contested scrums ....

I have in the past, called uncontested scrums, not due to pitch cutting up, but to standing water on the pitch after a downpour 20 minutes into the 2nd half ... Neither team were happy, until I pointed out the "drowning" risk, the choice was either continue "uncontested" or abandon the match !

Drowning risk, cover all angles Scarletman i like it.

You can drown in 1/2 inch of water .... If you are face down in water, & someone lands heavily on your back, it's a natural reaction to take a sharp gulp of air ... or water in this case ... lungs fill with water .... Referee in court fighting to save his house from the litigation brigade !
