It's 60 caps to play for Wales if you play outside Wales from next season.

Any player already contracted and playing outside of Wales will still be eligible for selection until their current contract expires. Then, if they have fewer than 60 caps, they will no longer be selected.

Biggar and Webb will not currently be eligible from next season, although Biggar will likely earn the 4 caps he needs to reach 60 in the Autumn Internationals and 6Ns - barring injury.

Webb, however, is on 28 caps; he will not be selected from next season - including for Rugby World Cup 2019 - until he returns to play in Wales. Big call for a Lions scrumhalf - bet he wished he'd known this last month.

In the press conference, Gatland said that Webb and his agent, Derywn Jones, knew this was coming, and also that Rhys hasn't yet signed his contract with Toulon - just the Letter of Intent. The inference is that it's not too late to turn down the contract and stay in Wales.

Ross Moriarty is the one to watch - if he doesn't sign for a Welsh team for next season, he'll no longer be considered for selection. Gatland is making favourable noises about the Dragons Shocked, but I hope he knows what to do. Dewch yma, Ross...

About time - been a total joke since its inception. Feel a little sorry for Webb as he was not in possession of the facts unless they notified him during the NDC negotiations. Cawdor now in pole position with Aled probably as back up.

I added the Gatland quotes after I'd first posted the story, to be fair to GPR. Embarrassed

The changing room video with Gats & Martyn Phillips (which I also added to the edited post) shows that they know that only Webb will be affected, but it seems clear that this has been discussed and trailed for some time. The announcement appears to be aimed at anyone considering following Weggar over the Bridge, and forcing Webb to reconsider before he signs on the line. Awkward for Rhys. Confused

Probably my fave Gatland quote of the day, if not ever:

"...part of my role is not just looking at the national team. It’s about what’s best for Welsh rugby. It would be naive and selfish for me to be like that. The best thing for the game and the national team is to have regions that are competitive and supplying players."

The WRU using the shirt at last. Its the only deterrant. And if you have served a region and your country and got your 60 caps then you have earned the right to go and supplement your pension.

It is a good compromise.  Wales are not NZ - we don't have the strength-in-depth to have a total ban on exiles - but to say you must reach 60 Test caps while playing for a Welsh region is decent enough.

It's tough on Webb. A season earlier and it would've been Sanjay in this hole.

But for us I think it's great news.

It stops English sides from hoovering up young talent. Hopefully we wont see another Owen Williams debacle.

I'm sure the chequebook is hovering over Steff Evans.

No real surprise but different noises coming out of Toulon.
