Nice one, pimp. That article is brilliant; his quotes could be taken as a critique of the modern game and the "crash ball" one an analysis of how Team Wales go about their business. 

A man so ahead of the game and his time as to make even modern day coaches look like neanderthals.

even this crash ball centre tactic, its moderately successful but when it comes to the big 3, you need more football and more varied  skill set to unlock them. in the case of doctor roberts, I cant fathom why he doesnt develop his kicking game more. he was a full back for years and can hoof it a long way

Carwyn was an exceptional coach. I met him three times - once at our school's awarding of colours evening (invited by our coach, who knew him); and the other two occasions, at cricket matches (Dad knew him from his time at Aberystwyth)... St. Helens and Grace Road. A very gracious individual.

All the points he makes are sensible, but as for being ahead of his time, this one stands out:

· I have relished studying coaching methods at Manchester United - heresy in rugby union - and also rugby league at Wigan - even more heinous heresy. The transfer of skills from one ball game to another should forever occupy the mind of a responsible coach.

So many other great coaches have adopted this idea since. There can always be cross-fertilisation between ball games of all sorts.

I forget he was a cricket coach as well..Id love to hear him pontificate on that great game tooSmile

You can tell he was a true scarlet from the quote where he complained about refs alone lol.

Crazy how we think we’ve advanced, yet we still get crash ball centres, pre-planned plays that don’t work and aimless kicks forward….. if only he was still around today, what a pundit he would make!

He would also always speak his mind not in a hurtful way but an honest way. ]
I dont consider any of todays pundits honest in the same way..Most are sell outs looking out for their own piece of the punditry pie

He was a pundit,  With BBC Wales back in the early 80's.  Great analytical pieces for the Sunday afternoon rugby programme and also for Y Maes Chwarae the BBC programme which went out live on  Sat nights on S4C.  That programme  ( which contained extended highlights of the afternoon rugby games ) started in Nov.1982  Carwyn would have been a regular pundit, but sadly died within a few months.  Great man, so grateful for memorable times, he was insightful and so generous in many ways.

One of the many Carwyn’squotes that I can recall was on a BBC programme from the Stradey clubhouse on the eve of the All Blacks game. He was asked if he had any predictions about the game. His reply was “If we do as we’ve planned and prepared for I will be a very happy man this time tomorrow night”. He certainly was very happy as were all of us fortunate to be there.

Fantastic, a shame he’s not here to give insights today. I was Born in the late 80’s, so I unfortunately missed this. I instead got the joys of listening to Warbs and BOD desperately trying to stay in the luvvie media circus and not have an actual opinion lol.

Very true Lincscarlet.  No disrespect to either of the above but Warburton has shown that he can be blown around in the wind.
Carwyn was a deep thinker and a visionary. He was also a great man manager.  Shamefully, he was shunned by the WRU, plus ca change!!
Mention has been made of commissioning a statue. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than seeing a statue of Carwyn looking enquiringly at Grav's ( or Raymond, as he used to call him ) on the concourse of Parc y Scarlets.  I treasure my memories of both. the Greek and the Roman , the Thinker and the Do-er.
Incidentally, Grav also started his commentary and pundit work on Y Maes Chwarae.
He brought along a different set of attributes to the broadcasting team - a huge personality and a warmth that enveloped everyone, including even the Jacks.
Neither he or Carwyn would have welcomed the possible demise of the Ospreys ( Swansea, to them ), but neither would they have shirked from defending the Scarlets, by any fair means, to ensure their survival, with the last drop of their blood.
