Just to get the ball rolling, here are some positive points we can make to SG regarding what we can do for the club:
We can organise transport to away games for Scarlets' fans. As discussed at the last meeting [and with SR at Twickenham], this is a real selling point. Look at the mess they made that day, think of the wasted resources arranging travel[from SG's point of view] and bad PR when it all goes wrong. I suggest that this should not be given too prominent a position in the presentation and certainly should not be included in the list of reasons why we are forming the trust. I think that this on its own could sell the idea to SG and could possibly be used to leverage support/ facilities if used properly. So, mention it as a possibility among the things we might be able to do for the club and let him bite; that would be my approach. A single, representative supporters' organisation allows the fans' views to be expressed to the club more easily, but also more responsibly. Decodes to "we filter out the nutters". I'll post some more ideas when I can think of them: mind's gone blank now :-( |

There are now several examples of these Supporters Trusts in rugby, especially as Edinburgh supporters (both of them) are in the process of forming theirs. Therefore this is something that the club should embrace sooner rather than later. The important thing for SG is that he isn't made to feel threatened and the advantages of our independence needs to be highlighted (not being puppets of the club etc). No doubt the club will be nervous at a kind of "loony" element as seen in their own forum a few years ago as well as some of the more vociferous members of the current forum. SG probably doesn't care too much about the "Gareth Bowen is rubbish" comments but will take very seriously the political rantings of the likes of S Pimpernel which have a sinister and sometimes libellous angle. What we don't need to look like is a Trade Union table thumping organisation. If we can persuade him that we can try and put bums on seats in the new stadium (how??) and organise the supporters. What we don't want is to be a propaganda outlet for the club.

Agree with both posts. We will have to be extremely careful to steer a path between your last two points. |

Again, I agree with the above. One of the ways we can dispel fears of the 'Loony element', as was suggested at a previous meeting, is for most, if not all of us to meet with SG . He can then see at first hand who and what he's dealing with. Following on from the information about the formation of the Edinburgh trust, I think we should suggest to SG that he, and other club officials should attend the inaugural Open Meeting, (further cementing their support for the Trust, a bonus for us). It could also mean that we would get more support from them, regarding hospitality at the open meeting, as in Edinburgh. As far as the point about organising transport for away matches is concerned, I agree with Bob that we should not prioritise this as one of our aims, but it could be a real clincher in gaining SG's support, particularly after the comments on the forum after Twickenham, and also regarding the coach (singular) to the Liberty on Tuesday. To pick up on ursa's point, we must also differentiate clearly between the Trust and the forum, and point out that it is only a means of communication for the Trust, and does not necessarily reflect our aims. We could also explain that our conversations here about the Trust are not available to other forum members. I suppose we now have to wait until we get confirmation from SG about a date before we can make any definite plans, but are we going to get together to 'hash out' our presentation to him? |

I'd say it was essential to have a "conflab" before hand. I'm available Wed, Thurs or Fri, but am away all of next week. Obviously, if the majority can only make next week, then carry on.

If you are wondering why we havent heard anything from SG lately then I have an answer for you. SG has been in hospital again for chest pains, he has fluid (water) on the lungs. He was released from hospital this afternoon. Had his medication change, been told to exercise more and not to get so stressed. |

I spoke to Julie after the Quins game on Sunday and she also said that Joanna wanted to sit in on the meeting, and she is also off for two weeks, but they were all still keen to meet up. I know he's a tough old boot but you have to wonder if SG is wise to continue in this role, for his own sake if not the Scarlets. Depressing reading in tonights Post re: the housing plan. They are concentrating their spin on defusing an 'us against the Scarlets' scenario. The hand of new, sorry, 'classic' Labour at work without doubt. |
