When Clancey went to the TMO to check wether a try was scored or not, it was during a passage of play that he was playing a penalty advantage to Scotland for England being offside.

So why did the game get restarted with a 22 drop-out to England after it was decided that it was not a try??

I never heard Clancey say advantage over during that phase of play.

Can anyone shed any light on this??

Smelly, I have to agree with you - I thought that some of Clancey's decisions were debatable to say the least!!

With respect Smelly, Mr Whitehouse retired as a Referee, not as a TMO, Fact

Although it was a very close call, I thought Whitehouse got it wrong on the Scottish 'try' - the Scot definitely got his hand on the ball first, and it looked as if the ball was on the ground when he did it - so a try for me. There's no need for 'downward pressure' any more, I understand.

Sorry but the downward pressure is still required and control of the ball too,on this occasion neither were obvious.
It's in the question too,"try or no try",means the ref doesn't have an opinion."Is there any reason why I can't award the try",means the ref thinks it's a try but wants to be sure there was no infringement(foot in touch for example).

Downward Pressure ...... ?????? You're all watching too much Rugby League .... Never a requirement in Rugby Union ! The Law Book only states that the ball must be grounded !
If downward pressure was a requisite, would a player holding the ball in two hands placed at the "quarter to three" position with arms outstretched be deemed to apply downward pressure ? Wink
Likewise, would a player reaching out to touch the ball at the base of the post be deemed to have applied downward pressure ? Wink
The ball must be in control & in this case I don't think it was ..
A Referee does NOT have to call advantage over, although they generally do so to aid the flow of the game, this gets picked up more now we have Ref Mic systems !
Smelly .... Just to clarify the officials at an international ...
  1. Referee
  2. AR 1
  3. AR 2
  4. Fourth Official (responsible for Replacement & sin bin management)
  5. Reserve Match Official (would replace 4th Official should one higher ranked be unable to continue)
  6. TMO (Ex Referee, Sat in a TV room/portacabin/truck outside the main stadium area with a TV Techie)
  7. Citing Officer
I do agree that Whitey made a terrible job of being the 4th official on Saturday ! LOL

Herman Tours ... Still the best way to travel !
