This might be a really stupid one:

The ball has been fly hacked on and is lying motionless in the in goal area.

The attacking winger is in a foot race to try and score. He dives, slides, gets to the ball first and pushes the ball forward with his fingers over the dead ball line.

Is that a try?

He's got to the ball first and is in contact with it, as it is in contact with the ground. Or can you not knock the ball on in the act of scoring a try?

Whilst you don't always 'have' to have downward pressure to score a try, if you're not actually holding the ball (in control of it) in your hand or arms then you do. If you press down on the ball with one finger then it's a try; if, like in the situation you describe, you push the ball forward but have no control over it then it's a knock on.
Simply being in contact with the ball at the same time as it's in contact with the ground isn't enough.

Try ! If the ball is loose, you only have to touch the ball ! As long as the ball is not projected forwards in the initial contact. The referee will generally look at the section of the ball that is in contact with the hand. Top most half would indicate a grounding, contact below the median coupled with forward projection of the ball would indicate a knock on.

For once, your answer is not really clear!
