Appreciate it's a long time off but starting to put plans in place for the trip to the Sportsground in April and wondered if it is best to fly in to Knock and get a hire car, or Dublin and get a train down. There is only flight a day to Knock from Bristol and it seems from looking at old posts most people seem to be flying in to Dublin as obviously far greater choice of flights ?? Any advice much appreciated

We usually fly to Dublin because it's dead easy to get to Galway from Dublin airport. There are plenty of cheap hire car places and a bus that goes directly from the airport that stops virtually opposite the Sportsground (which is where most of the hotels are). You can also go by train which I'm told is good. At Knock you have to pay €10 development fee to get into departures so worth factoring that into the price. Although Knock is much nearer to Galway than Dublin is, the bus takes nearly as long and stops in every tiny village in West coast Ireland. Shannon is also an option but same as Knock really. If you get a bargain flight to Knock/Shannon I'd take it but if all's equal Dublin is probably best.
Of course the best option is fly to Dublin and get Scarlets legend Ieuan Evans to drive you across but that may have been a once in a lifetime occurrence. |

The train across is direct, takes a couple of hours and is usually around €20 each way

That's great thanks for the replies sounds like Dublin might be the easier option but of course doesn't help when you've no idea which day of the weekend the game is on just hope not Sunday pm as will be on way home.....

No that's the usual problem I'm afraid. I'd factor that in if I were you. Don't book till you know.

Another option is ferry from Fishguard / Pembroke and ride across to Galway on a motorbike. This season's bike trip for me.

I flew to Shannon and drove up last time. Car hire is very cheap.
