South Sulawesi, actually - as well as Java (Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surabaya). Why? There's no problem in the south or north whilst the central is just a power struggle which the Indonesians dismiss. I assume you have vast knowledge of the area? Perhaps you can explain how the Christian majority of Tana Toraja live in perfect harmony with the rest of the south? Or how Makassar is a happy blend of muslim, colonial Dutch protestantism (for which the city is proud and keeps the area known as Old Rotterdam as a historical monument) and a short period of Japanese dominance after the war? Also, this wasn't a holiday but a business trip where I was escorted and talked to a large number of real Indonesians and not just those you meet on a holiday in hotels or the shops. As a matter of fact, we have an Indonesian dentist from Jakarta coming to stay with us for the weekend. Anything you want me to ask him about Sulawesi?

I'm with you sal - that's exactly what faith is - DOGMA; faith in things which CANNOT BE PROVEN. And if anyone does go on about electricity then talk science at them! Now that's all about PROOF. Science is all about questioning things, and finding answers. And accepting you don't know everything and being able to accept other people's ideas. Not settling for what you're brainwashed to believe as a child. Development. My thinking on religion is pretty simple: it's about dying. The question of "what happens to us when we die?" is the creator of religion. Dying scares the shit out of most and religion helps a lot of people cope with it. You're after some sort of justice after death which developed into the "how you should live your life" dogma. Like anything, there's [beep]s who have used it as a way of gaining power and surpressing others. The thing that really annoys me about certain religions is the way the surpressed people (women) are happy with things - as this is their place in life and so shall get into heaven after they die. There's no excuse for it, or for forbidding criticism of it because it's religion. |

I think deporting her to Liverpool was harsh though. I would have prefered the 40 lashes myself.

I misheard the story of the release - I thought they'd released One Million Gibbons not Gillian Gibbons - now that would have been a diplomatic triumph and a half!
