Everyone has heard of Boudicca (Buddug)and Joan of Arc but ask about Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd and you will usually get blank looks. One of very few women to have led an army into battle but not even a footnote in most history lessons. Tragically betrayed by a Welshman and murdered by the English around this date in 1136 which sparked an all too brief revival of Independence in Deheubarth which more or less covers our region .I think it would be a fitting tribute to dedicate our last game of each season to Gwenllian’s memory.

There are still memories resonating in local names such as Rhyd Goch cemetery in the Bont and Rhyd Goch Common named after the red ford when the Welsh army led by Gwenllia turned a ford on the Afon Llwchwr red with English blood.
