Sorry if this appears stupid but I have two questions:

1) Legal passes - is it "the hands going backwards" (as JD always says) or the ball's movements?

2) Line outs - why do hookers always chuck it in? (Is that the law?) I've often thought we should have more wingers throw it in, get it back, sprint down the line to score. Sorted. Like the old days.

1) the ball must not travel in a forward trajectory. (If a pass looks borderline the ref , if he's paying attention could use the hand movement to give benefit of doubt. That said if the hand move forward, the ball normally follows)

2) You're quite right, the winger used to throw in, There is no "Law" as I'm aware to say that the Hooker must throw in, but some years ago, when hookers were first used in this way, many wingers took poundings from the opposition Hookers, so it was generally matched "Pitbull to Pitbull" The thow in is now coaced to hookers as "Specialist Positional Training".
