In a recent RWC match, a player attempting to catch a kick ahead dropped the ball.
The ball seemed to travel backwards from his hands until it hit the ground, then it landed on the point and clearly bounced forwards. The ref called a knock on. Was this correct? Should a decision be based on 1. the trajectory of the ball from hands to ground, or 2. whether the ball moves forward at all (including after bouncing), or 3. whether the ball ends up further forward than it was at first contact with the catcher? This sort of thing is not uncommon, so it would be good to have a clear, definitive answer! |

This is an awkward one that Referees' often get wrong, purely down to the Dynamics of the Player/Ball & surrounding players.
DEFINITION: KNOCK-ON
A knock-on occurs when a player loses possession of the ball
and it goes forward, or when a player hits the ball forward with the
hand or arm, or when the ball hits the hand or arm and goes forward, and
the ball touches the ground or another player before the original
player can catch it. If the ball travells backwards first it has NOT been knocked on, even if it hits the floor / another player & then travells towards the opposition try line. If a ball moves forward AFTER bouncing, NO KNOCK ON !(unless the ball travelled towards the opposition tryline prior to bouncing. The most common error is NOT to award a knock on, as the player has run past the ball in the act of knocking on ! This then seems to the Ref that the ball has travelled backwards. Please take note that the Ref has to make a decision INSTANTLY, & does not have the benefit of camera angles, & with the best will in the world, his view can sometimes be obscured by defenders ! |

Thanks for clearing that up. I can see that it is a difficult one for refs, especially if they are some distance from the incident - and in the case I referred to, the ball only just went backwards, so no surprise the ref got it wrong. |
