Have been watching England breeze past a hapless, inexperienced West Indies,  abd a disappointing  Scri Lanka this Summer.
Root has been majestic,  and Atkinson  promising, but the batting is shaky abd totally unreliable.  Ducket is a disgrace, plays every ball, ahd gives bowlers an opportunity 6o -70% of the .time. Crawley never  knows where his off stump is, with his front foot frequently  nowhere to be seen near the pitch of the ball. Brooke plays in a similar vein, as does Pope

Cummins and the other Aussies  myst be licking their lips at the prospect of this shower appearing soon for a test series.  No bets taken for the outcome.
Playing entertaining  attacking  cricket is one thing in 20/20  style, but winning cricket,  against quality, serious opposition is another.

unfortunately its a weak period for test cricket atm they steam rollered over a hapless windies side was a bit sad...windies loads of talent but no application and a few stars lost to the t20 circus....sri lanka a bit more competitive and today it seems are on target to win the consolation 3rd test match tomorrow
smith atkinson and pope have made progress....loads of talent but can they apply themselves down under? thats a whole different ball of wax...But the mighty India next summer is the first real test

I unusually watched the England 2nd innings for a while yesterday Mark & it was the worst batting I have seen from any International team in a long time. Which superbrain's idea was it to replace the injured Crawley with Lawrence who, to my knowledge, has never opened in county cricket.

He was clueless - his only real scoring area being leg side he was so easy to contain & Duckett at the other end is not much better. Brooks is fast becoming a liability with quite a puerile attitude as shown when the Sri Lankan seamers kept their line outside off - a quite legitimate tactic.

England have unearthed a couple of decent players this series - Smith is quality & Atkinson could prove to be a decent replacement for the aging Woakes. Why MacCallum didn't select the most promising young opener in county cricket to come in for Crawley baffles me. As you say the Aussies will be looking forward to bowling at this rabble. I would persevere with Crawley but we badly need to find a 2, 3 & 5. I would keep Smith at 6 with a fit again Stokes at 7 provided he can bowl decent spells.

GPR, again spot-on.
He played a high level of cricket,  and knows his stuff.
For my part, I also played a good level of league cricket, but not as high a standard as my friend  above!
I opened  the batting,  and was coached from an an early  age to play every ball on its merits. Following this dictum,  I scored a shedful  of runs, rarely giving  away my wicket,  unless beaten by s good ball.

This England side are a shower, and frequently  give away their wickets.
Ducket , Crawley , Pope abd Brook, are all talented , but lack application.
Has anyone  told them test matches are played over 5 day's ?
The dismissals we have seen recently  from the above are a total  embarrassment,  abd an insult to paying public and opposition.

The problem is Mcullum the coach, and his talented,  but misguided captain  Stokes.
They need to give players confidence and licence  to express themselves,  which us good.  "Bazzball" worked for a while, and has been recently 'tweaked to encompass a more pragmatic  approach.  Clearly thus pragmatism is not in evidence  much ATM.
The probable defeat to the Sci Lankan 's may come as a blessing  in disguise , as the players and coaching staff need to have a real good look at themselves  before real stiff tests emerge on the horizon.

The irony of bazball and this whole t20 approach is that a man like boycott or atherton would in fact be worth their weight in gold now to a test team..Men who could drop anchor, avoid cavalier shots and play each ball on its merits, could hold the innings together as the carnage unfolds around them
