Great for Girmay and the Intermarché team. There’s a lovely article in the Sunday Times about them. Instead of ignoring the fans, as most of the big outfits do, the Intermarché team welcome and engage with the fans that turn up to their base at the races. “They remember it’s a sport not just a business”

Ineos are pinning great hopes for the stage win on Pidcock’s mountain biking prowess and abilities on unpredictable surfaces.

He has been pretty subdued to far. Think he has had some sickness if I recall.

Some interesting psychology coming into play. Pogecar & Remco questioning Jonas's tactics of just staying on Pogecar's wheel at the moment & not trying to attack. Think he may have got them spooked. He has his plan & that involves him gaining condition as the race progresses. He has a reputation for attacking on climbs so may well have a stage in mind towards the end of the race where he will make his big effort. Meanwhile he is planning on sticking close to the leader.

Some serious climbs this week on Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday - look out for Pogecar trying to distance his rivals before the next rest day.

I question why Evenepoel didn’t just say, “Stuff it. I’m off. You can do what you like”. Pog too for that matter. Vingegaard’s light weight put him at a disadvantage on the loose gravel surface.

That disadvantage is a huge advantage in the long climbs to come in the remaining stages, especially the last week.

Geraint Thomas was asked who he thought was favourite for being in yellow in Nice at the end of it all. He replied Vingegaard.

Yes its starting to get quite fascinating. I sense that Pogecar thought he would have opened up a bigger margin by now. Good stage today where he might make his move. The longer Jonas sticks around the top 2 the twitchier they will get.

Today’s Times carried a piece of an interview with Pogacar where he found himself talking a bit too much about Vingegaard and had no natural way to stop so, after a pause, just said, “I prefer to talk just about myself”.

More compelling action today.

Pogacar tried his best but Vingegaard was not for being gapped.

No spoilers just in case.

Jonas made his statement on his bike as opposed to the press. He has definitely got under Pogecar's skin. The UAE team did a huge amount of work yesterday trying to break Jonas, Remco & Roglic but when the crunch came Pogecar did not have the conditioning to take advantage.

The big test now will be psychological - he is still well placed going into the 2nd half of the tour but Jonas is proving that his plan of sticking close to Pogecar is working. Two more climbing days on the weekend could see Pogecar strike again but if Jonas is still close going in to the next rest day he is going to make everyone twitchy because he looks capable of a big push of his own. He has done it before to Pogecar & that will be playing on his mind. Fascinating contest & don't forget Remco who may not have the ascending/descending skills of the other two but give him reasonable terrain & he is quick.

There’s also the psychological and physical weight of the 3 weeks in the Giro winning by a lot more than he needed to.

Maybe we will see a change of tactics from Pogecar & his team. To date on all the non sprint stages they have worked hard at the front of the peleton keeping the pace high in an attempt to burn off Jonas' questionable fitness. Jonas's team have not been very evident so he has used UAE to take him along.

Perhaps on the weekend we will see Pogecar sit back following Visma & Jonas on the two mountain top finishes. He is after all the leader so somebody, sometime has to make a move.

Took a night off from he highlights and caught up in the papers this morning.

Hat trick for Binny, as his fellow countryfolk know him. There’s a lovely part to the Times report dedicated to a non-cycling follower. He’s a teacher in Leeds at a school that’s got a large percentage of Eritreans.

Prior to the first stage win, the teacher was oblivious to Girmay - soon predictive text may stop trying to alter his name to Germany - and listened to the stories. He knew cycling was a big thing there but no idea about a pro in the Tour from Eritrea.

He let his pupils celebrate that day, little expecting a repeat a few days later and now yesterday marked his hattrick.

Fitting that Girmay’s idol was Peter Sagan, as he races in a similar manner. Not just a sprinter but someone capable of playing his part in breakaways.

The green jersey looks almost sewn up, provided he gets to Nice.

Primoz Roglic has succumbed to his latest crash and not started today’s stage. The team say he is focussing on “his upcoming goals”. His shoulder wound didn’t look too great.

Well that shows how much I know about grand tour tactics. UAE went at it again yesterday setting up Pogecar for a strike with 5 kms uphill to the finish. Remco & Jonas could not live with him. Another summit finish today - if Jonas has anything left in the tank today he needs to find it.

Strangely enough, I thought Vingegaard looked in better shape in the post race interviews than Pogacar. After the day on the road, I’d have expected it to be the other way round.

More compelling viewing as man recently recovered from punctured lung (iirc), amongst other serious injuries, climbs into second on GC although lost a bit of time to the yellow jersey. An amazing feat, while Pog continues to build on his pre-race favourite tag.

Today’s start is very interesting with the immediate steep climb up the Peyresourde, followed by four more Cat 1 climbs before the finish on the Hors Catégorie (steeper than Cat 1) Plateau de Beille, after a near 200Kms of riding.

None of the easy build up like yesterday.

Take my hat off to Pogecar. Yesterday he sat back & allowed Visma to set the pace with Jonas making his play on the final climb. Pogacar went with him & sensed perfectly that Jonas was struggling & attacked flying up the mountain to the finish taking big chunks of time out of all his rivals.

The tour is his to lose now with only two riders within 10 minutes.
