Well another weekend of games and what have we learnt. Henshaw continues to impress, Wyn Jones has to start at LH surely and Beirne & Henderson have booked their seats on the plane. Conor Murray & Sexton gave a masterclass in game management. LRZ is the best wing available to the Lions - his midfield carrying yesterday was a revelation. His pace really frightens defences and he is just not pace - he has a good rugby brain and can pass. We have unearthed a real gem for the next decade.

My team :-

15. Liam 14. LRZ 13. North 12. Henshaw 11. Watson 10. Sexton 9. Murray
1. Wyn 2. Ken 3. Furlong 4. Itoje 5. Ryan 6. Beirne 7. Curry 8. Faletau

16. Cowan-Dickie 17. Kilcoyne 18. Francis 19. Henderson 20. Tipuric/Navidi 21. Cawdor 22. Biggar 23. Tuilagi/Foxy.

I know Nigel I just can't see any/many making the test team. Hogg, Sutherland & Watson I think will tour. A lot of people rave about Russell & van der Merwe but I don't think Russell's goalkicking is good enough and van der Merwe is poor in defence. Time will tell.

I wouldn't compare the two - Gethin was an absolute machine with a huge engine, and a decent scrummager - I'd say, he always did enough to keep his end up in the scrums, but didn't usually attempt destructive scrummaging, whereas he'd keep going all day around the park - tackling, jackaling and even on one memorable occasion charging down a kick (O'Gara, I think) and scoring a crucial try. Mako is a positive liability at scrum time... he has power as a carrier, but nowhere near Gethin's engine.

As for LH prop for the Lions, if I may return to that - I definitely think that Wyn Jones is way ahead of the other candidates. As for Healy, I put him on the bench because I could not think of any other decent candidates (and don't rate Mako) - but if Sutherland is reckoned to be better, I'm happy to revise that bench slot. Problem is, the Scottish forwards were destroyed by Ireland, so no individual (apart from Watson) got a chance to show much...

In truth, I'd have picked a fit Rob Evans for the bench, but who knows when he'll be back, so... If anyone has a suggested upgrade on Sutherland or Healey, then go with it. It's one of the problem positions ATM.

Mako struggled big time against Furlong yesterday so your summation looks pretty accurate. Wyn continues to be the stand out LH candidate.

That will make Aber’s day ClapWink

Something I thought hilarious was reading the match reports from yesterday that dismissed many a player’s Lions hopes, only for those very names to appear in the later pieces about who should be in the Lions that were written earlier in the week.

You’d have thought the journos would’ve had the presence of mind to update their earlier pieces, although maybe prevented by deadlines. Yet, why not update the digital versions?!

Maybe Scarletnut could enlighten up us on these challenges and how the deadlines vary and whether there’s any chance of updating such pieces. If there isn’t, you’d have to wonder whether the editors are content with looking foolish and inconsistent.
In a world where you can be anything – Be Kind.

Big decisions still seems to be halfbacks. I think Gatland will look at combinations.

9s with a realistic prospect:
Price 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳£󠁴󠁿
Youngs 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Gibson-Park 🇮🇪
Murray 🇮🇪
G. Davies 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
T. Williams 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

10s with a realistic prospect:
Russell 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳£󠁴󠁿
Ford 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Farrell 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Sexton 🇮🇪
Biggar 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Looking at those options I’ll think he’ll want a tried-and-trusted combo in the squad who can act as the “default 9/10”. That means I think he’ll go for an English pair and an Irish pair, with Russell and Tomos thrown in as a more adventurous duo who might be able to play their way into contention in the build up games.

It will be very interesting to see how many English players get selected and in particular how many Saracens players.  Maitland (Scotland) and Itoje apart, the Saracens players have been average at best in this 6 nations, and Itoje was a penalty machine.  I think Eddie Jones thought that it would be a blessing playing the Saracens boys but the lack of competitive matches came back to bite them (pity that😂).
That won’t change for the lions as there is likely to less games on this tour so they won’t have the luxury to slowly build up their match intensity.

Well, I 'played the selector' on the BBC earlier - you can do it here:

and ended up without a single English player in the side, after they were crushed by Ireland!

I think that the Saracens guys are not match fit, and this has cost them. Also, after the return to form and fitness of the Murray/Sexton combo at 9/10, I'd think that they will suit the coaches' plans pretty well - but Farrell hasn't had a good tournament. The English players who have impressed most are Watson and May, but there are an awful lot of top class wings ATM.

As for Itoje - surely, he and Beirne are similar in that they can play second row or 6 - and if you had to pick one for the test team, which one would it be? I sort of think it' be Taigh!Wink Itoje has been more use to the opposition in most games, with all the penalties he's coughed up.

The only Scots I see in with a chance are Hogg (I'd prefer Liam), Russell (maybe on the bench if a steady 10 isn't working) and Watson (superb 7, tough competition though).

FYI, my most recent selection had 8 from Wales, 6 from Ireland and one Scot in the starting XV... daresay it'll change again in a week or two!

I thought it was a very average six nations. No one team played amazing rugby.

I wonder if Gareth Davies will go. I think he’s been one of the better 9s in Britain for a while, I think the last tour came too soon for him and this one might actually come too late.

Who put their hands up this weekend? No Welsh boys thats for sure. For me Kelleher did his chances no harm with a full on 70 minutes + against Exeter. He carries well, hits his man. If Gatland is looking for a destroyer 6 look no further than Rhys Ruddock whose form these past few months has been breathtaking. Looked hard at Simmonds at no 8 but found that most of the good stuff by an 8 came from Conan who has size and pace. He could well be Taulupe's back up.

Just saw a tweet suggesting the coaching set up might be:

“Lions coaching staff named on Tuesday - looking like Townsend, Tandy, McBryde, Jenkins. TBC.”

Three Welshmen there (plus Gatland 😉) which I think is most impressive given they’re based across three teams in Scotland, Leinster and Wales.

I read that English D coach Mitchell, Steve Borthwick and Andy Farrell turned it down. I’d be surprised if Paul O’Connell didn’t get a phone call from Gats too.

Hopefully apart from Jenks no other current Wales Coaches will go so they can keep focus on Wales.

Coaching team now confirmed: Robin McBryde, Gregor Townsend, Steve Tandy and Neil Jenkins. Whether the tour actually goes ahead is another matter.
