Usual, few 100 although the car park was heaving.

Not great I have to say, in fact he was worst than that. Then again when Scott Roberts played his 1st game he was abysmal but on Sunday he changed the cup semi and because of that game is now playing for the Scarlets tomorrow. It was onlt Rhys' 1st game so lets give him time.

1 player who was magnificent was Simon Gardener, if you think Gethin Jenkins is quick around the field just wait until you see Simon. He outpaced a winger at 1 point, what an engine on the boy. He also had Newport crabbing in the scrum but Mr James Jones only picked up on it once!!!

A quick question, did James Jones go to the same school of refereeing as Nigel Owens?
Simon is a bit of a speed merchant would like to see him and Gethin have a head to head as all the time we watched him over the years he has got quicker and quicker not bad for a young man weighing in at 21 st

Before last night's match I saw Simon as a little bit  too big or slighty overweight like puppy fat (that Gethin had for years and years) but last night he looked more muscular to me and really solid. Not sure if it was a different vantage point I had or what. What I also liked about him yesterday was he was talking to the players all the time, as if he was the captain!! Simon certainly has the attributes to be our tight head for years to come and to be so young and talented bodes well foir us.

Yeah I think Simon has a great future ahead of him, and I think he deserves it, as it all  started when he was only 12 years old.  Then when he went up the age groups he started to go up to Stradey 2 times a week for training  and carried it on untill now , so he has put a lot of time and effort over the last 7 years.

Unbelievable how you can blame the referee for that dire performance. And all the yellow cards were fully justified.

Everything they do is fully justified by your reckoning.

I'm not blaming the ref for the result, though I did think the second yellow was harsh, considering there were newport players off their feet at the ruck as well.

I can't comment on the first yellow, as it was on the far side of the field.

One question Alun, how do you know it was justified?  There was no way you could have seen the alleged offence either!

I can't rmember specifically what they were for, but at the time, I was sitting with another referee, and we both agreed that they were all justified, and yes, IMO, there should have been a yellow for Newport - They were turning the ball over far too often - Illegally in my opinion.

Tackle area is huge in reffing, thats why I think Nigel Owens shines. He wants a game of rugby to be played and demands players to roll away and hands off.
JJones on the other hand waits for the infringements to happen and then bangs them.
the Cup final against Neath will be won and lost in this area and the way Llanelli play rugby I would love NOwens to be reffing that or a ref with the same ethos as him.
What do you guys think?

it wouldnt be suprising if you supported a fellow referee and were reluctant to criticise him (and isnt james your 'mentor' ?)

i thought he was terrible - they were offside ALL game, going in the side, over the top, off their feet, playing the ball on the floor and he let them get away with it all but gave US 3 yellow cards !!. i think it was sean hopkins that looked STUNNED and in TOTAL disbelief when jones carded him.

might have been worth taking Simon Gardener out to Munster for tonights game, give him a 1/2. nothing to lose and would give him experience. i have been impressed when i have seen him this year big enough and i think good enough (maybe not straight away) but he will get there.

Once a Scarlet, always a Scarlet!

It will be hard enough to beat neath without owens reffing the game.

You say they were all justified and now youcan't remember what they were for.

I will ask you again, how can you say the card was justified for collapsing the scrum?

There is no way you could have seen the incident as it was on the other side of the field!

Also the ref picked up once through the whole game that newport were wheeling the scrum but that was the only time. I mean it was so blatant at times it was untrue. Nobody can justify that incompetence I'm sorry.

No.

I find it unbelievable you can blame the referee for a thrashing like that.

Llanelli players looked completely out of their depth all game - Well, past 10 mins.

Alun are you saying a ref's interpretations/decisions don't make a difference. newport are a good side but perhaps the 26 point gap could have been less with another ref.
JJames in my opinion is a very fortunate guy to be reffing at this level
