New interpretations of a ‘high tackle’

Both sons have been involved in games where this new interpretation has been in play.

Startling penalty count ( over 40 in both games) for just that offence.

Obviously refs have been briefed to really focus in on it, at the same time I can see rugby tactics tilting …

Example is that instead of clearing your line with a kick, teams are just running a couple of phases and inevitably get a penalty.

Even saw a guy run through a line and the centre grab him around the chest from behind after a foot chase and the ref give a penalty try.


Could be fun!

To note this is not applied at full international yet.

There is also the issue around the ball carrier presenting a target for the tackler (i.e. not dipping), seen a couple of pens for that, I can't see that being refereed within a couple of weeks but it's all very messy at the moment.

I can't see it working because it's such an unnatural thing to do, you know someone is lining you up to hit you as hard as they can and you've got try and stay upright and think there you go have a shot at me.

Agreed, the new rules are below chest high though.

A bit left field but I wouldn't be surprised if all rugby jerseys would have to have a line in white or black depending what primary colour the jersey is going around the body at armpit level and any tackle above that line will be deemed a "high tackle".
