What an exciting match. 5-27 down at 30 minutes Pembroke come back to lead 31-30 @ 65 mins. Much more exciting than anything on Judgement Day.

Pembroke didn’t deserve to be there anyway. Disgrace what happened to Cardiff University.

Cardiff Uni shouldn’t have been in the Bowl in the first place, in fairness. There’s a reason that there’s a Cup, Plate and Bowl competition. Premiership and Championship players shouldn’t really be playing for the Uni on permit to knock out Division 3 teams. The Bowl is the stage for Division 3 standard players, after all.

This one is the WRU’s fault for not foreseeing that Uni teams would have eligible ringers above the level the competition is intended for. It was disappointing for the Uni to have a final pulled away at that stage, but they will only have a wait of 12 months before they get to play at the Millennium Stadium in the varsity match. That was possibly a once in a lifetime occasion for Pembroke.

They’ve been in the competition for years, to only be dropped from it once they’d made a final was a terrible decision, and the manner in which it happened was worse (two appeals from Pembroke) and in fact they only played two players who had played a higher level of rugby, one of whom was on the bench anyway. Despite this, they had dispensation from the WRU to play both.
Also your varsity point is untrue. Whilst Cardiff Uni itself may have got there, they have over 110 registered players so not everyone will get a chance to play in the Millenium.
The WRU should have let them have the final they earned then taken out of the competition next year.

The WRU messed up by not sorting this out 10 years ago when the Bowl was introduced. Any team knocked out by an opponent who’s drafted in players from a higher standard would naturally feel aggrieved. I’m told Pembroke decided to appeal after seeing one of their opponents playing for Cardiff RFC on S4C.

I feel for the Div 3 standard Uni players. At this stage there was no decision that the WRU could’ve made that was fair on everyone though. It was cruel on the Uni to lose their place a few days before the final, and it would’ve been cruel on Pembroke to be knocked out in a semi that wasn’t a level playing field. It’s a shame that none of the Uni’s previous opponents realised and raised the matter with the WRU.

The university knew the rules but yet didn't follow them. They've been doing it for years. I sympathise with the player who genuinely are at that level but have none for the ringers and the management. For once the correct decision by the WRU
The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.
