Almost unique, a superstar with genuine humility and concern for others.

Growing up as a Welsh-blooded boy in England, I used to score tries like Phil Bennett in the back garden, then, to my dad's great annoyance, make dirty great divots all over the lawn so I could convert like Phil Bennett.

His speed of thought, bursts of acceleration and physics-defying sidesteps were on another level, even among the greats of the '70s, and he was an inspirational play-maker for Llanelli, Wales, the Lions and of course the Baa-baas, and a motivational captain - his team talk for the England game was the stuff of genius.

Seeing him among the crowd at Scarlets games, you got a measure of the man - a proud club president, yet incredibly humble and would have time to talk to anyone. He embodied the Scarlets, on and off the pitch - a legendary player, an icon and a great, great man. RIP Benny.

Even though we knew he was very unwell, its still such a shock to hear. An incredible player and figure in Scarlet history. Just so sad to lose someone like Benny at a relatively young age these days,. I was lucky enough to see him play many times, he always lit up a game with his genius. He will never be forgotten RIP Cry

RIP Benny and deepest condolences to Pat and the boys.

Was it Heol Daniel? My father grew up there, and his mam was there until the 1980s.

Full of feelings today.

I had the pleasure and privilege of watching Benny play in his prime for Llanelli, Wales and the BaaBaas. He was quite simply a legend, his sidestep and pace are well known but his creativity and game control were also outstanding.
I also had the pleasure of meeting him on a number of occasions such a genuine and humble man.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends, we have lost one of the all time greats in world sport.

I’m not old enough to have watched Phil live, but must have played my Crowning Years and History of Llanelli RFC VHS a hundred times during my childhood. What an incredible player he was. Such a lovely person too.

I’m glad that he was able to see the unveiling of his statue and realise how loved he was by the community.

RIP.

Very sad news - a great rugby player and - even more important - a great human being.

I first saw Benny and his famous sidestep when he played in the Llanelli 7s schoolboys tournament at U-15 level - even then, you could see that he was something special (1963?)

The last time (and, I think, his last game for Wales) was when Wales beat France 16-7 in 1978 to clinch the Grand Slam, with Benny scoring two tries with sidesteps near the France line... having seen him so often over the years, I knew what was coming and that he would score even before the 'step' - the French probably knew, too, but still couldn't stop him!

RIP Benny.

I first saw Benny playing as a new RFC player under the then new lights in Llanelli mid week in the flood light games which were quite popular in fact! Barry John was just leaving us and I was disappointed and worried. But after seeing this young man perform I was really excited because his style of rugby was exciting. He then went on and upwards as our greatest player. Captain of Llanelli Wales and the Lions .

I loved his Gareth quip re the Ba Bas game.. “ Gareth only ran 30 yards and got his knighthood. I got an OBE and arthritis in both knees! “ … 😂

It’s obviously a matter for Pat and the family but I do hope that if not a funeral, we can at least have a huge celebration of his life on the field at Parc y Scarlets. So many supporters would want to remember him ; she’d some tears and celebrate a wonderful life. Fingers crossed .
